Yes, larger audience, more consoles sold in general, and expanding markets in countries such as China, India, etc should mean that the total number of consoles should increase each generation. I think this expanding effect will overcome generally stronger competition to end up with Wii overtaking PS2...
remember almost every successful console sells more in year 2 than year 1
