Forums - Sales - First day sales in Japan (2/5) - Demon's Souls (PS3), Another Code:R (Wii)

Depressing numbers all around. Not even worth hopping into a heated debate about what flopped and what sold well when everything started below 25k. Its a real shame whats happening over there with console gaming.

All that the console market needs is a real killer app title or three to elevate it.  Satoru Iwata seems to realize this too, since he says he's going to attend to this dilemma.

re: Wii & RPG titles:

In terms of RPGs, the Wii is easily the weakest platform. The 360/PS3 have more and better RPGs - not to mention bigger budget RPGs. The DS kicks its butt. And the PS2... well, better not mention that.

On top of that, the Wiimote just isn't designed for RPGs - at all. Maybe it could be - but not traditional RPGs, no way. Action games... Sports games... but not RPGs.

Heck, it hasn't even got a SINGLE decent RPG from Nintendo: Golden Sun, Paper Mario (Super Paper does NOT count), Pokemon, Mario RPG, ...

In fact - I have pretty good collections for both the Wii & DS. I don't have a SINGLE Wii RPG (no, Zelda doesn't count). On the DS, I have 8...

Just about says it all. RPGs may *never* take off on the Wii, just like fighting games won't.

Are you serious?

OT:Disappointing sales for Another Code. I still hope they bring it to NA. I dunno if the DS did will Im too lazy to check...

The 28 from famitsu prolly didn't help too much with the sales ><

Well, lets be fair here. Demon Soul is a pretty big budget game, aimed squarely at the Japanese market. Sales look pretty promising - although its bound to be top-heavy.

That is so not true.  Japanese retailers completely screwed up for this one.  They underestimated the demand of this game and ordered too few copies for sale.

Honestly, with so little information about this game before launch, and the art style of this game is so westernized, who would have thought that this game could be decent and Japanese core gamers totally buying into it.

Well, it seems a very Japanese market game to me. Nothing to do with sales though - its no surprise retailers haven't order a huge number of units.

So how many games that are NOT established IPs have actually done well in Japan over the last 6-12 months? Any?

Well we've had White Knight Chronicles, Wagamama: Girls Mode, and even Wii Music sold moderately well.

Everything did horribly. Demon's Souls did ok, I guess. Probably won't reach 50k which is still fairly bad.

Out of only one reason: 50k weren't shipped. It'll do at least 80k man.

No, it won't. With a 23k opening, it will sell between 30k and 35k first week, provided they were able to ship more units to retailers.

And with it opening at 30-35k, how is it going to manage beyond a 2x multiplier? This is Japan were talking about.

This generation, for all 3 consoles (X360, PS3, Wii), the following games managed beyond a 2x multiplier:

  • Blue Dragon (X360) - 82k Opening
  • Fire Emblem (Wii) - 73k Opening
  • Pokemon Battle Revolution (Wii) - 60k Opening
  • TES: Oblivion (PS3) - 22.9k Opening
  • Enchanted Arms (PS3) - 14.4k Opening
  • Argarest Senki (PS3) - 9.0k Opening

Looking at this list, we note that all the PS3 RPG's were below Demon's Souls first day. The rest of the games above it were on other systems.

So it's a pretty safe bet to say that the game will sell between 50k on the low end, and 65k at the very high end.

I guess someone is eating his words right now. Sorry for thread-necromancy, but in light of the good sales of Demon's Souls (first PS3 game to ever return to the japanese preliminary top20 after a week of absence) I think this is justified.

Sorry for digging this thread up, but with demon's souls damn near 120k, this is deserved.

enjoy

Demon Soul is easily going to hit 150k or maybe more.... this game can sell like 30 - 40k till the end of this yr..

oh shit necro

It's also funny that people have been predicting for months that those low-budget JRPGs would end on the Wii, while most of them have been announced(exclusively) for the PS3.

And most of the the big ones are for the Wii. (but to be more accurate, most big pushing Japanese games are on Wii, not necessarily RPGs)

I've noticed these RPGs have started to be announced once the PS3 went over the Wii this year...I'm expecting more Wii announcments when the Wii gets similar boosts from SW3, MH3, Tales, whatever. And although it's far away, once DQ X are released we'll probably see a ton of announcements of RPGs to capitalize on that fanbase. Probably before too.

That doesn't make any sense though, none of these games were just thought up in that time, but had already been worked on before.  Unless these people could see the future I don't think the two have anything to do with each other.
