Forums - Gaming - Killzone 2 VS Gears of War 2 through the eyes of a programmer

To be honest though if we get into technical talk I will get lost. I just think a fair comparison can not be made yet, unless of course someone can compare unreleased KZ2 footage to unreleased GEoW2 footage.

Released vs. Unreleased just isn't fair, even if the outcome puts KZ2 on top.

That is my opinion.

I understand where you are coming from, it is never fair to compare an unfinished game to a finished one. However, I am comparing something that was finalized a while ago. Also, when looking online for videos of things relavent to the point I was making, I was unable to find any significant changes in the updated videos. However, I will play the full game and report back with any updates.

I found this to be a very interesting read.

Even though it seems like the OP thinks KZ2 has a better look overall (I could be wrong), I still do not see how this is a fair comparison. Isn't this a comparison between a demo and a finished product?

Judging from what many said in the KZ2 thread as well as the KZ2 demo thread, on the main menu of the demo the game reads "2008 Sony Computer Entertainment Europe", actually if you look at a Dec 2008 to Jan. 2009 comparison you can pretty much figure out for yourself this is dated code. So there is a good chance the comparison is a dated one from Dec 2008, before GG added the extra bells and whistles to give the game a much better appearance.

What I find impressive though is as the OP said, you sit someone in front of both games and odds are they will say KZ2 looks better. This is exactly what happened last night when me and my Sisters Boyfriend played KZ2 and Gears 2, he thought KZ2 looked much better.

@Garnett

How often do you play a game and spend your time zooming in and looking at textures on a wall? I certainly do not.

You can sit here and say Gears 2 has better textures, but graphics account for MUCH more than just textures. Gears 2 does not have anywhere near the amount of stuff going on around you, the animation is not on the same level, the physics as well. You need to take this all into account. Both may look comparable with images on the forums, but in game it is clearly obvious KZ2 has it beat.

My opinion by the way.

Alot, when you die you have to look at something, and the walls are right there :)

Well this is the best I can find with a 30 seonds search. In the scene on right, 4th from the top there is now lighting on the back of the allies ship. for one. 1st screen shows the textures look better, check the facial hair. The blurriness from before isn't there anymore. In the last picture it also seems the textures on Rico's face have been upgraded.

As I said though, I am not very informed with all of this stuff, but from my position I can see a considerable difference between the 1 month periods.

Looks like they changed the color tone, sharpened a few textures, and changed the texture color on some objects. However, it's difficult to judge from those small pics. The geometry looks the same.

that was a fanboy's attempt to downplay KZ2 but somehow redeem GeOW2, I admire the civilised way you used to show your fanboy views but in the wnd they are just that... fanboy views

Another thing, although this is pretty much personal opinion as well.

When making comparisons we are also taking images from any point in GEoW2 (In other words we get to look for the parts that look the best) and comparing it to the first area in KZ2.

Not sure about anyone else here, but if I play the demo of KZ2 and check out the Warehouse area, then go into GEoW2's first indoor area (Part where Locusts come in the door and you wait for them top surround the explosives and then blow them to hell), to me anyways I can see a clear edge for KZ2.

This is why I think unreleased vs. released is not fair. You can grab anything you want while we have no clue how KZ2 looks later on in the game. It could look a ton better than the opening level. For all we know you might find some vegitation. Who knows?

Also the fact you acknowledge that the textures look betetr in the Jan 2009 build, changed texture colors and such so everything did not look the same makes me think even more than that even though KZ2 comes out on top, the comparison just isn't at the point yet where we can make a fair analysis.

I agree about the geometry part though, not many round edges so far, but as I said before, who knows how it gets later on.

I am not sure if you read the entire thread (I know it is long) but I've always maintained that Killzone 2 looks better than Gears of War 2. I was just trying to explain to people *why* it looks that good and how it was forced into this art style . Also, there are people that have had the chance to play much more than just the demo and they also complained about the lack of vegitation in the game. I hope we are able to find at least 1 tree in the game.

I know you think it looks better. I believe I wrote that in one of my posts. In my first one I believe.

For those who played the beta. I believe they only played a multiplayer which only had 4 out of the 8 levels available, so once again, who knows what you will find in the other 4 levels? I think the game will surprise even more in the later levels. I hope the other 4 multiplayer levels do the same.

I believe many games work this way. First time I played Gears of War I thought it looked sick (still do), but later on in the game it made me go "WHOA! WTF! OMG!" all over again because some areas later on just looked so much better. For me anyways.

I agree though that I would like to see some vegetation as well.

I actually really like the way you made your analysis, don't get me wrong. I am just a person who believes you shouldn't compare until at least both titles are released. I hope you will come back and do the analysis again with a finished retail copy.

I learn quite a bit from threads like this.

I am glad you enjoyed it and I will revisit this once the game comes out. Sadly, I have to go to work. Hopefully when I come back the thread is still in tact.

It has been quite controlled in here so I am fairly certain it should still be where you get back.

As said before, I look forward to your analysis later this Month or early next.
