Forums - Nintendo - Why can't Wii Ware games be bigger?

There are good games don't get me wrong, but they could be a lot better.  Games like Target Toss Pro: Bags, Pong Toss and Snowboard Riot need more to them.  They are virtually not playable by yourself.   Good if you have friends over, but that is it.  They take up about 200-300 blocks and the Wii can hold a lot more than that.  Make them twice as big and you can get a lot more substance to these games.  Also it is not that big of a deal to put them on an SD card after they are downloaded.  What is the reasoning they aren't made better?

Lost Winds is another title that irritates me.  3hrs tops of play time, give me more stuff to do on these things.  Charge a little more money, it not going to stop me from buying it (IF IT IS GOOD!)

Wiiware games are about 40MB but its only the installer once you unzipp/extract/install it requires more space.

The 50MB limit is probably cause of Nintendo. Making a smaller game enable most of Wii users to download it without dying while waiting, not everyone has a huge boardband to download huge game. It seems its part of the direction of the company you know Wii for everyone, yea even for the 56K users.

It's also a good way to experiment and create new ideas. Bigger games cost more and companies risk less. With low budget games they can try to create, in Iwata's words, "a new Tetris", which wouldn't be possible with high budgets.

Also, some Snes, N64 games were of less size and still offered long periods of gameplay and replayability.

Many of the best games ever made fit into far smaller spaces. Blame the developers for not doing the work.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

When you download a Wii Ware game, Mario runs into the left side of your screen, grabs a few coins, out the right side of your screen, and AROUND THE WHOLE WORLD so that he can come running into the left side of the screen again. He does this until the game is finished downloading. He doesn't rest for a single second. If Wii Ware games were bigger, the extra strain on Mario would kill him. I'm perfectly fine with smaller sized Wii games.

Plus, without background downloading, I would die of boredom.

the whole 40MB is BS

ofcourse most of them are because Nintendo RECOMMENDED 40 MB max

but stated before that you are allowed to go over their recommended max

the reason it was recommended was because of download speeds etc..

stick to the rules= easy to download, simple game
ignore rules= bigger game, longer to download

now...the only way to make it bigger is if you are SURE it'll be a big hit and sell....

most 3rd parties..as usual...don't go to the max with the Wii..especially not WiiWare

but..40MB is fine..we don't need bigger..

Animal Crossing Wild World is only 32 MB

don't tell me you can't make good WiiWare games with 40MB

man they are hard enough to manage at 40gb. switching out with SD cards takes forever. People who complain about install times would go nuts trying to deal with that little space if the games were even bigger.

seeing as the wii requires a broadband connection to utilize the online features at all, 56k isn't a viable issue.  it's more in part to allow indie devs as well as large companies a chance to make and distribute new and innovative gaming ideas.  less expense and more creativity involved within the boundaries of the limit.  also, due to console memory constraints at this time as well.

wiiware and vc are leet

This restriction was put in place so you wouldn't max out your memory after about 5 or 6 games but with the SD card fix, downloading to and playing from the SD card with SD cards being as big as the basic 360 Hard Drive it could open up the limits, and maybe to the point of getting 500MB+ games and Wii demos, here's hoping.
