Forums - Sony Discussion - PS3 Shuts Up Gabe Newell!

It's IMO wise to treat comments from people like Carmack and Gabe with a bucketload of salt.

Gabe is just a Microsoft-era millionaire and behaves as such in support of Microsoft. Valve may not have much technical knowhow amongst its team as they always relied heavily on 3rd party middleware game engines to base their games on.

Carmack has been proven to spout propaganda for Microsoft as well. He even once claimed Doom couldn't be done on the Amiga, but of course as soon as the source code was made available a few days later Doom ran on older Amigas than same age top PCs could.

Gabe also had time so discuss Windows Vista, the next-generation operating system from Microsoft due out late next year, and the Xbox 360.

"Look, I spoke to some people at Microsoft, and as I said, I can't point to a single feature in Vista that I care about that solves problems for us at all. And I had the same conversation with the Xbox 360 guys. It's like, Xbox 360 doesn't make my life any better, and in fact, it makes it a lot worse, as you're telling me I can't count on having a hard drive."

Yeah he sounds like Microsofts bitch alright...

God. Gabe said that? What an obvious Sony fanboy. I used to respect him, but now I think he should pour another bucket of lard down his gullet and then shut his mouth. The nerve!!!!!!!!11

It's a valid point, even the original XBox had a harddrive for developers to take advantage of. Most developers agree if all 360s had a harddrive to take advantage of (data caching) it would significantly up the 360/PS3 multiplatform potential. Likewise with regard to Blu-Ray vs DVD storage space.

The Cell is different, it's a processor which requires good game engine design, something which benefits all other multi-core and multi-processor architectures out there. The Cell does not limit potential in any way, it just pushes game engine designers to develop more effectively.

Apparently I should have added /sarcasm, but I didn't think it was necessary.

He was just saying something obvious. So what?

"The PS3 is a total disaster on so many levels, I think It’s really clear that Sony lost track of what customers and what developers wanted," Newell told Game Informer magazine. "I’d say, even at this late date, they should just cancel it and do a ‘do over’. Just say, ‘This was a horrible disaster and we’re sorry and we’re going to stop selling this and stop trying to convince people to develop for it.’"

He didnt say anything negative about the PS3,he just pointed out facts, now if he said PS3 sucks and its a POS wihtout dated parts then yes i would agree.

Had he said "its sales are quite disappointing and under expectations" and "exploiting the Cell without development tool suitable to mask enough architectural differences while letting fully tap its point of strength requires additional efforts by the developers and this could be not economically justifiable in projects not giving enough guarantees of sufficient sales" we could consider him objective, calling PS3 "a horrible disaster" is over-the-top, to say the least.

Well the PS3 is a diaster at least it was...

Graphics that are going to blow the Xbox out of the water (Not yet)

Sales are gonna be HUGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

it was a diaster compared to what Sony WANTED,THey dont want a thirdplace best machine, they want MONEY..

You put it in this more reasonable way, for initial Sony and its fanboys ambitions it could be considered maybe not a horrible but at least a half disaster, but Newell clearly meant it in an absolute way, while we, who aren't fanboys, could better define it disappointing. And about triumphant proclamations, well, we not fanboy can admit without feeling our entrails mangled that, whichever the system, reality will always fail compared to hype

So his words don't make him look like the MS fanboy you were painting.

So what? It means you can't formulate opinions about someone's integrity and credibility based on one quote/sentiment.

Why is the original quote proof of prejudice and this other quote so easily overlooked as "something obvious"?
