Forums - Sony Discussion - PS3 Shuts Up Gabe Newell!

@Cypher1980: Oh, right. What I meant was, Team Fortress isn't Valve's creation. After all, it was created back in the Quake days, before Half-life. So when NJ5 was saying KZ2 is sorta ripping off on Valve... well, technically they aren't, really. That's the way I see it, anyway.

Yeah fair enough.

I guess any on line capture the flag and other deathmatch type game can be traced all the way back to DOOM mods.

In that respect all FPS are essentially just further refinements of that original 1994 game.

As a Nintendo fanboy I do like this thread.

Just imagine a 2 headed ogre from warcraft... one head being a Sony fanboy and the other a MS fanboy... now that would be hilarious... he did it, no he did it..

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

Personally, I think Valve are both increadible and lazy developers. Half-life, portal and L4D are all AMAZING games both in my opinion and the general public. But the fact that they don't want to invest the time in learning the PS3 architecture, the fact that newell in the past didn't want to work on consoles before saying they were "too hard to develope for" and that their graphics engine haven't improved since HL2 just gives me the impression that they are increadible but lazy. They make games that are fun, inventive, and atmospheric but generally lack a little something imo. L4D I also thought didn't give me nearly enough content for my buck and I was sorely disapointed in that.

But why must they learn the ps3's architecture? Its not like its first place or anything and a system which is easier to develop for also has higher sales than it , so whats the point? The J man isnt sayin they should abandon the ps3 but to say they are lazy because of sony's arrogance to purposefully make their system harder to develop for while at the same time not beating the competition is a big F.U to not only to valve but to every game developer.

Other game developers just bite the bullet and accepted that they needed extra profit from their ps3 sales, valve on the other hand didnt and there is nothing wrong with that.

I'm not saying they are lazy because they don't take the time to develope for the ps3. But I both think Valve has shown a history of "taking the easy route" when developing their again, amazing, games. In addition to that, I don't see how anyone can see his comments as not being inapropriate. True, the ps3 has proven harder to develope for but it's sufficient enough to mention it and let it be like that. Even if he was to elaborate on it, he chose a very poor and childish manner in which to do it. A lot of time and effort went into making the ps3 and yet he suggests they trash it and start from scratch. How would he feel if I was some important name in gaming and talked down his games and said he should scrap them and start from scratch. You get the idea. The man is just inapropriate.

The thing is Valve FPS games sells millions and millions. How many copies did the original Killzone sell? None of the Sony made shooters have been on par with Valve shooters. Not even close. It's a fact that many developers didn't even attempt to make any games on the PS3 because they knew it would be a huge learning curve and cost millions just to get a game out the door. Companies like Capcom, Namco, Squareenix and Konami didn't release anything that great for the PS3 it's first year. Games kept getting delayed because the PS3 was a B**** to program on. I have nothing against the PS3, as I own one and plan on getting Killzone 2 as well. Sony still has a way to go and there's nothing on the PS3 that blows the Xbox 360 games away. Nothing!!

'gaming till I'm gone'

*yawn* I wonder if gabe hybernates through winter after eating through autumn hmmmm

OT: as I said before, it's arrogance, pride and ego. Ofcourse this doesn't mean he isn't successful, but it doesn't show a great personality. It also shows he likes the easy option and if he could, he won't bother making anything impressive unless he is forced to.

I dont really care about l4d or team fortress, so I don't really care is Sony gets a port. I'd be happier with a geow port a million times over compared to a valve port. The point is, business is about networking and competition, not slagging matches.

E.g. Regardless of how much spin ms and Sony put on the gaming devision, when it comes to laptops, they work together, but never do they slag each other off. Ms could easily say no, but they don't. Does ms need the extra money? No! But it's just ethics and networking.

Warcraft?  They totally ripped that off from He-Man!

The concept that a software developer should bend to the will of a hardware manufacturer simply because they wanted to go in a different direction is foolish.

Plenty of software companies warned Sony their design was not developer friendly and they should consider a more standard PC design, it was Sony's choice to not follow their advice. Gabe Newell has every right to laugh and say "I told you so".

Also, the concept that a software developer should tell a hardware manufacturer how to run their company is foolish. If Gabe doesn't wan't to dev for ps3, he shouldn't but he can keep his pie hole from spewing insults while he's at it.
