Forums - General Discussion - Opinion Piece: Videogames should return to surrealism.

Good work. No game sums up this view better than Mario Galaxy imo. What you wrote is exactly the type of game Miyamoto intended to make and i think he should be recognized for giving merit to surrealist level design and physics.

I still remember earthworm jim, thats another amazing example.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Games were so much better before, everything was better! What has worsened the most over the years is game music, 20 years ago game music was awesome...

So true.

OT: Wow, I agree completely; your descriptions recalled some very interesting memories.

To lavish praise upon this title, the assumption of a common plateau between player and game must be made.  I won't open my unworthy mouth.

Most of today´s games are still un-/surealistic imo and they will always be. I`m currently playing Ninja Town, Lemmings and Lumines. If the industry will ever try to reach realism with the majority of their games, it wil lose most of their fans.

You think games should return to surrealism? I think they never left.

I also think that many people mistake the internet community and gaming media overhype of lots of "realistic" FPSes and action games as a threat to classic pure game concepts. This threat was never there imo. In fact it will always be cheaper to create unrealistic, yet inspired games like World of Goo, Braid, Castle Crashers, N+, Pixeljunk Eden and many many others. But not only most downloadable games are completely un- and surealistic, but also most retail games. Fortunately this won´t change anytime soon, if ever at all.

Looks like Shadow of the Collossus to me.

OT: For sure.  This is one of the reasons I have stuck by Sony as I have always thought they have trended more towards the artiser side of gaming.  Team ICO is a great example, although the PSN has really shined too with some incredibly unique games.  The PSP has surprised me too with artsy and surreal games like Loco Roco and Patapon.

I won't sell Nintendo short either, as Mario Galaxy was pretty unique.  I can't think of any others off the top of my head the floored me in this way that I have played other than Twilight Princess.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

Team ICO is terrible. They've made 2 games which both got good reviews but failed to sell 1 million. 1 million on the PS2 is less than 1% of userbase.

The Wii simulates real activities

Calling Team ICO terrible because of a lack of commercial success is stupid, and I think you know that.

As for saying "wii simulates real activities", the controller is not part of the surrealism. Being able to swing or point instead of push a button I don't see as detracting from the surrealistic nature. If I did then there would be far more surrealistic methods of control than dual analog. Such as "Let's Tap" which does seem pretty damn cool.

You can find me on facebook as Markus Van Rijn, if you friend me just mention you're from VGchartz and who you are here.

I'll take a game like Legend Of Zelda ,Chrono Trigger or Secret Of Mana kind of game any day of the week over the more realistic type games because I my friends, have a vivid imagaination.
