Ugly character design unless it's ugly for a good reason.

Needing to have unlocked a certain ability or license in order to use a weapon or item. (ff12 comes to mind)

Having to input a series of button commands in order to beat a boss.

Health Regen in shooters. It is alright in some games but does it really need to become the standard. I am sure our soldiers would love to be able to hide for a few minutes and then be good to go.

Cutscenes you can't skip. Sometimes I could care less what the characters think about the weather. I would like to get through. Also there are times when you lose to a tough boss and then you have to watch that dumb cutscene again. (FF10, freaking yunalesca)

Being able to move but still forced into turn based combat. If the battle system is going to be turn based you might as well line up my characters in a neat little row and let me select their individual actions. Running around only to be hit by a monster facing the opposite direction is completely silly.

Only one save slot. Others may want to play also. It really sucks when someone saves over your data.

Slow character movement. If the game is about traveling around at least provide a couple of option for faster movement.

Lack of bag upgrades. It is not possible to carry infinite number of items at a time but at least provide the gamer with a way to increase their carrying capacity.

Save spots few and far between. I believe pokemon Colosseum had this problem.

Too many saves spots. Especially if the game heals you at a save spot. Instead of having to heal or use items you just wait it out to the next save spot. Makes the game way too easy.

Grinding restrictions. I don't get anything for killing an enemy X levels below mine. If I want to grind, I should be able to regardless of how overpowered I get. Grinding for the most part is boring so not many do it, but there are those of us that love to whoop up on bosses and see how powerful we can get really early on.

Lack of bosses. Bosses are cool and should somehow be incorporated.

Lack of enemies. Shadow of Colossus syndrome. A video game is like a good book. You have to build up to the climax. A little dungeon crawling and a few baddies can really work wonders.

All good points.

I also forgot. Times (particularilly in Resident Evil) where you have to go all the way around a road/path because you charachter just can't seem to step over that 1/2 inch enclave and/or grass thats just a little bit to tall.

FFIV humor. Everything blamed on Golbez.

I have more

- Wrong button map and no option for customization.

- Overuse of Quick time Events

- Games that are just movie wannabes

- Game characters stating the obvious over and over

- Custcenes when a gameplay is far better suited for a scene

I don't consider MGS4 a movie wannabe.  I also disagree with the last one.  Lost Planet kept all the action to the gameplay and look what happened to that game's story.  Both MGS4 and Lost Planet had lengthy cutscenes.  The difference is that MGS4's story is actually compelling.

escort missions with worthless bad A.I. characters that fall down stairs and die or run out in the middle of a fight

and

missions in games where you have to collect a crap load of something in order to progress the story....ugh

Game characters stating the obvious over and over

Oh yeah, big time!

When you take damage just from falling if you actually land on something.

lol, thinking about fall damage reminds me of Half-Life/Source based games where you could survive a fall from any height as long as you landed in water, even it if was an inch deep.

------------------------

- Too much sex appeal in games: I'm all for drooling at a pretty looking girl, but many games are taking that too far with breasts the size of bowling balls.

- Annoying briefing segments while in-game: These are when the game is explaining your objectives to you while you have no control over the camera as it flies around the level. These tend to feel too forced in both the look and many times, voice acting.

- Catchup AI: Motorstorm can be fun, but it ruins the feeling of triumph when you do all that work to get ahead and all of a sudden the game cheats to allow the AI drivers to beat the crap out of you.

- Unfair AI: Kind of like above, but this is more associated with shooter games. Lets take Resistance 2 for example. If you so much as stick your toes outside of cover, every enemy in a half-mile radius will instantly turn to you and immediatly charge at you. I know that it sort of makes sense as far as the story of Hale and his chimerian connections, but it just makes for a frustrating experience. Not only that, the enemies know you're aiming at them like they were all bitten by radioactive spiders that gave them the ability to sense danger.

-Feeling like everything is dependent on you: I like feeling immursed in a game. I don't want to feel like the goto guy for EVERYTHING.

-The main character not having a name and/or voice: I'd say one of the games where this works well is Half-Life 2 where you play everybody's favorite mute, Gordon Freeman. Then you have other games like F.E.A.R where not having a name or voice makes it very difficult to connect to the story. Mainly, I'm tired of hearing things like "Hey you!" or "Hey buddy!" to address the character I'm playing as, it kills the immersion for me. Like with Final Fantasy X, I think it was stupid that you could rename Tidus because it would sound so forced and akward when characters talked to him because the dialog had to be delivered incase you changed his name. It worked in earlier games because there was no voice acting, but it doesn't hold up here.

This reason alone makes me hate Motorstorm.
