I wouldnt mind it in Argentina either, I would just travel if my NT maked it to the WC, and if they dont I would watch the matches in a very comfortable hour.

I wouldn't mind either, but since Brazil is hosting 2014, we can't be candidates till 2026. But I'd love to see a WC in my country

I said before that I don't care that much where 2018 and 2022 will take place, but that's mainly because I'm glad they gave the 2010 WC to Africa (finally) and the 2014 WC to South America (it was about time, 36 years after Argentina).

The next two tournaments will be extremely interesting:
Will we see the first African champion in 2010? (I hope so)
Will the Brazilian team cope with the nearly unbearable pressure in 2014?

Wouldn't you want to see another Maracanazo? That must have been really something, I'd love to see another one

I haven't read most of the thread... (soccer or football... the name doesn't matter to me)

Still, didn't Fifa say that they wanted it more split across continents?

It was Europe in 06.

Africa in 10

South America in 14

Europe in 18? No, I doubt that.

Europe in 22? That's definitely possible.

So what else is there for 2018? The alternative is Asia... Or Australia (apart from NA)

I don't actually want to see another Maracanazo, but I think it will be extremely hard for Brazil to win the title in their own country. The immense pressure from their own fans and mass media might kill the team.

I'm curious: Which of your country's titles is considered more important in Argentina today, the first one in troubled times 1978 or the Maradona one in 1986?

(The 1978 final was the first WC final I ever watched on TV, though I'm not sure anymore if it was already broadcasted live over here or time-shifted. The atmosphere was absolutely incredible even on TV).

The 86 is better remembered, like you mentioned, the 78 WC is like evoking the terrible thing that was the most cruent dictatorship in the history of our country (76-83). Of course, everyone remembers that WC and is happy about it, but also everyone admits that the 6-0 to Peru that allowed us to qualify to the final (we needed to win by 4 goals to qualify) was orchestrated (the Peruvian goalkeeper was Argentinian and he "didn't try" to avoid the goals). And also, the dictators used the WC to cover the kidnapping and killing of thousands of people

The 86 on the other hand, doesn't evoke any bad memories, everyone views that match with England as a revenge for the lost war in 1982, and the two unforgettable goals only help to make it more important.

Still, both are very important, of course

It should go to country that actually call the name of the sport by its real name, not some inbred name that exists solely to make things difficult.
Europe where it hasn't been held recently such as England, Italy or Holland.

Well then nobody should have it.  Since Football isn't it's correct name either and a name that was made up.

Assosiation League Football is the correct word... sand Football is just a shortening that makes things difficult because there are at least 4 different sports with the name football.

American League Football, Assosiation League Football, Canadian League Football and Rugby Football.

Soccer being short for assosiation is much less confusing since there is no other sport named Football.

I do agree though that it'd be best to put the World Cup in poorer countries that could support it however.

I agree with that, the US may be superior onl to Bolivia and Peru, but I doubt any otherteam in the region, maybe Venezuela, but they have gotten better in the last years. Your league is really bad, teams dont even descend if they finish last. And maybe you have more players than us, maybe they are bigger and faster, but technique is the most important thing. Players like Messi are small, and I dont even have to get to the point to name superstars, playes in my NT that are small areway better than yours.

Population may do something but its not that important. Uruguay is very small, still they are way better than the US.

Most kids in south america dream of being in their NT and playing the WC, especially in argentina and brazil, and that is how you make good players, they learn since they are small with passion.

Firstly I think we are definitely better right now than Peru and especially Bolivia.  I think we are also pretty clearly above Venezuela.  I think we are competitive with teams like Chile, Uruguay and Ecuador, maybe Paraguay.  Definitely we are well behind Brazil and Argentina (although this is no shame for most teams in the world).

You don't know much about our league, I would guess.  It is vastly improved since its founding in 1996.  Players like David Beckham can come here and have a minimal impact.  Perhaps closer to home, a player like Marcelo Gallardo played here in DC last season and did pretty well when he was healthy (not often enough, sadly), but hardly dominated every match.  MLS is a decent league but still has a long way to go to challenge the top leagues in the world.  It is not as good as the Mexican league at this point, although we are not too far below them.  But the Mexican league is a very good league that challenges even in the Libertadores.

In any case, the bottom line is I feel you are underrating American players, MLS and the US national team, but I would not claim we would even necessarily qualify from the South American group in World Cup qualifiers - it would probably be close with those teams I mentioned above.
