Forums - General - USA TO SUBMIT BIDS TO HOST WORLD CUP IN '18 OR '22

Here we go again!

CHICAGO - The United States plans to submit simultaneous bids for the right to host the World Cup in either 2018 or 2022.

The U.S. Soccer Federation said on Thursday that president Sunil Gulati will announce on Monday the intention to bid for the tournament in both years. The U.S. staged the World Cup in 1994, the highest-attended World Cup ever.

Monday is the deadline for submissions to FIFA, and four bids are expected from Europe: England, Spain/Portugal, Netherlands/Belgium/Luxembourg and Russia.

In Asia, Indonesia announced its candidacy on Wednesday, joining Australia and Qatar. China and Japan were expected to follow in the coming days.

FIFA intends to decide on the 2018 and 2022 sites in December 2010.

Next year's World Cup is in South Africa and the 2014 tournament is scheduled for Brazil. http://www.tsn.ca/soccer/story/?id=265064

Hopefully the USA will not win the bid, the greatest/largest sport event on the planet should be held where people have a passion for the sport.

Hopefully England get it, so I can go plus we haven't staged it since 66, and we won

How big is Qatar? Is it big enough to stage a World cup?

I have mixed feelings about the USA getting it. It should go to a country that lives and breathes football (like Brazil in 2014). But it would be a good chance to show them a proper sport

The bolded bit is probably what matters the most to its organizers.  So I wouldn't doubt America gets one of those.  Besides "Soccer" as we Yanks call it, is growing a lot over here and we even have pro teams now, OMG.

11,437 square km or roughly 1/3 the size of Belgium.

Belgium is doing a bid aswell, but in joined cooperation with the Netherlands. So I really doubt Qatar can handle it.

It should go to country that actually call the name of the sport by its real name, not some inbred name that exists solely to make things difficult.
Europe where it hasn't been held recently such as England, Italy or Holland.

I think the UK should go for it, hosting the olympics and world cup in the same decade would be great for British sport.

wiki pasta, bids for 2018

Possible Bids:

FIFA announced on October 29, 2007 that it will no longer continue with their continental rotation policy, implemented after the 2006 World Cup host selection. The newest host selection policy is that any country may bid for a World Cup, provided that their continental conference has not hosted either of the past two World Cups. For the 2018 World Cup bidding process, this means that bids from Africa and South America would not be allowed.[12][13] Countries that have announced their interest include Australia, Canada, China, England, Greece, Japan, Mexico, Russia, United States, the combined bid of Spain & Portugal and the combined bid of Belgium, Netherlands, & Luxembourg.

Good find draik. The new hosting system could actually be a good thing, I dunno

I think 2018 is probably too early, but we have a good shot for 2022. Hopefully we can continue to improve and have a chance to wreak some havoc at home in 2022!
