Forums - Sales - Xbox 360 passes the half million mark in Spanish territory

- Translated quickly from Spanish to English -

Microsoft has decided to confirm the good times Xbox 360 is experiencing in the different markets of the world, announcing that its next-generation console has exceeded the barrier of the half million mark in Spanish territory.

The data comes from the consulting firm GFK, which also confirmed a 128% increase in sales of the console with respect to the Christmas season of 2007.

These growth data are even more important when we consider that the market for video games has seen an annual sales decreased 1% compared to 2007. The data show that Xbox 360 console has best evolved over the past year, increasing its sales by 95%, while its competitors has had much less to grow or even decreased pace. Analysing data from the lower price of Xbox 360 in September 2008 and the second week of January, the market for consoles sold dropped by 4%, while Xbox 360 sales increased by 128%.

The data also show that the market share of Xbox 360 has increased substantially, reaching 30% of consoles sold in some of the busiest shopping weeks of the year and doubling its share of 2008 versus 2007.

As for the top selling games, besides the great sagas such as "Gears of War 2" and "Call of Duty: World at War," the musical game "Lips" was the big surprise, placed as the best-selling game in the platform during the Christmas season. The good sales of this title and others as "Guitar Hero: World Tour, Rock Band 2," "Scene It? Big box office hit "or" You're in the Movies "show that the supply of social games and music has been very well received by users Spanish Xbox 360.

Sonys biggest European stronghold is being breached!

I know that the 360 is still well behind the Wii, and will never get close to it, but it's nice to see that, if the price is right, consumers are willing to pick up the console.

Also, interesting to see that Lips was the #1 selling Christmas game for the system.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

PS3 games are selling a lot more than 360 ones in Spain (and overall in Europe). Anyway, it's true that 360 had a big increase in sales last months due to the price cut but if falls behind.

We love our Karaokes. There's even a Singstar tv show on national television.

Just a look at the best sellers in GAME (the biggest videogame retailer in Spain) to see PS3 and Wii games sell a lot better. So, no love for Microsoft in Spain. The big price cut (1/2 or less the price of the PS3 in the cheapest versions of 360) helped sales, but that's all.
