Forums - Gaming - Why has Sonic failed to branch out the way Mario has?

Nintendo was able to take Mario and stick him just about everything short of a GTA clone (this was only witnessed on Robot Chicken).  However, Sonic seemed to only be able to do 2D platformers and a pinball game.  I am sure people have this or that other pet game (Mean Bean Machine?  Wait, that is Robotnik).  However, on the whole, Sonic wasn't able to break through.

Any idea why?

Drugs, and lack of direction.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

Nintendo = Kick ass

Sega = Not so much (anymore)

?

The Playstation doesn't really have a mascot like Mario for Nintendo or Halo for Microsoft, there never really was a specific character from the PS1 days that kept showing up in these huge games. Unless Gran Turismo counts but I don't know how that'll work :S

Lack of a consistent line of high quality games.

The truth is Team Sonic is no where near what they use to be. It breaks my heart. T_T

Former something....

Closest thing the Playstation had to a mascot was Snake from MGS. It could be argued that Crash Bandicoot was one also, but his time came and went and he was soon forgotten.

Crash fell so hard its not even a joke.

Anyways it was always suspected that sonic used performance enhancers (what kind of hedgehog can move that fast and walk on 2 legs?) and it caught up with him. With the media hounding him he couldnt take it no more and started incorperating cheese ball 80's music and horrendous gameplay as a staple in future games.

That is the downfall of sonic.

N64 is the ONLY console of the fifth generation!!!

Dude, what the heck does this have to do with the thread? I really don't get it. :P

I think the main problem with Sonic is that his entire being now revolves around going fast (even though his old 2d games are hardly just that). Mario is an extremely versatile character compared to Sonic, at least in my opinion.

That, and Mario just kicks ass on a degree that's untouchable. Imagine the best GTA game starring Sonic that you can think of..... Now imagine the same for Mario. No contest imo. :P Mario has way too much going for him as a character in almost any situation. In fact, I can't think of one genre I wouldn't like to play as Mario in...

That being said, I absolutely love Sonic!

Simply: Sega switch from 2D side scrolling to 3D camera angles fails really bad. With recent games in 3D like it is now, it put a sour taste in many gamers across the globe. Word of mouth alone made the recent releases fail bad.
