Forums - Sales - VGChartz way overtracked Zack & Wiki - Z&W was a commercial failure

Also with regard to people using Svens marketing budget figures to expected sales and whatever, I think it's a bit out of context.

Zack and Wiki was intended to be a new IP, a big franchise, I addressed alot of the ideals of what this means with my post regarding Viewtiful Joe. Anyway, Capcom probably had ambitions for Zack and WIki to do on Wii what Ace Attourney did on DS. That is, lots of sequels, maybe a DS spin off.

They weren't investing $2 million in advertising expecting 400k Wii sales, they were expecting it to establish a strong brand that could be successful through the whole of the Wii life - hence why they made sure the game was good, and didn't let it be some shovalware junk.

I think Sven was just too pissed off to explain himself to what were mainly just bitch troll posts with little meaning. I don't know for myself and I guess it's open for interpretation, but I severely doubt, personally, Capcom invested that money expecting Zack and WIki to become the best selling third party Wii game straight off the bat.

Still we see people making up guesstimate figures to try and say Capcom were in the wrong or something though...sigh.

It's really impossible to say without a solid idea of figures and costs and everything else. Say the first title lost money, I'd say a sequel would be justified if the revenue generated by the first game outweights the expected reduced costs of a sequel, considering you'd expect a smaller dev and marketing budget.

But we don't know, we've not got anywhere near the figures to even begin to contemplate why Viewtiful Joe had sequels and everything. My gut feeling says it was just CApcom felt if they kept pushing the IP they could get more out of it, eventually, but it didn't work out in the end, neither of us can really say whether that was close to the truth or not, or what any other sequence of events could suggest.

It'd be great to get more incite into the minds of these companies to be honest, in my opinion most people are too 'generous' with how profitable video games are, but as I say, we need more incite.

If we were talking about a sequel I might be inclined to agree with your logic. However, there were 2 sequels and a spin-off fighting game. After the second game failed, why would you make the third? Why in gods name would the worlds largest collection of fighting game IPs make a spin-off fighters based on a failed franchise? Simply trying to push the IP doesn't make much sense given their catalogue of games. Megaman, and Resident Evil were super huge at the time. Dino Crisis might have just died off, and Devil May Cry was taking off. The Capcom vs SNK series was doing really well also. There was simply no need to push out a new IP let alone a new fighting game based on it.

If you're going to pick on others for not taking Capcom's word literally, why don't you take his word on advertisement budgets literally as well? My point with the $2 million / 400k thing was to show that we can't take non-official information as gospel.I remain doubtful that we're getting the whole picture from these two Capcom reps. At least it would be good to see some recent shipment data for this game, which isn't available as far as I've seen.

It would also be nice to see how many games have had such big advertisement budgets in Japan, although that's probably not easy to come up with.

PS: Another problem with Capcom is the messy investor relations page. I've never seen a IR site with so many sections and separate sources of information.

Nice discussion with you all, hate to cut it short but it's half past midnight here and I've got a 9am lecture. Hope you can keep things going and I'll be sure to check up on whatever is said in the morning, may reply.

At the two posts above me, I would reply but I'm finding the waking up in the morning hard enough as it is :(. Hope someone not as tired out their brain trying to sober up as me can continue this threads debating and whatnot.

Anywho, have a good night and hopefully I'll find time to continue this in the morning, chances are we'll be onto the next piece of news by then.

So Viewtiful Joe was a failure also? It's no wonder they won't make another one.

I still think the problem's with CAPCOM and not the IP. Fu**s**ts!

If it was, indeed, a failure why was there a direct sequel; a follow-up Brawl-style game on two SKUs; and a DS version? For a failure, they sure did spend a lot of money extending the franchise...

lol Sven. I don't really care what comes out of this, but Sven likes to talk out of his ass too much. Stopped trusting him long ago. Not gonna start trusting him now.

Capcom financial numbers or he can bite it.

I think I like this sassy new Soriku.

Soriku > Sven

That was part of my "two SKUs" comment (one for Cube, one for PSP) :)

And two PS2 ports!

I suppose someone could twist this around and say Capcom made so many versions because they desperately wanted to squeeze a profit out of the game (although I don't think it usually happens that a bad-selling games get ports as a desperate move).

Ports, spin-offs and sequels, no. Clearly someone is speaking out of their rectal orifice, at least in the case of VJ.
