100 Price cut, then 27-30 million
50 price cut, then 25-28 million
No Price cut, then 23-26 million

So regardless of the games that are coming out in '09 you predict the Ps3 sales to go down no matter what? Taking a wild guess here, you don't own a ps3?

If there is a $100 price cut then sales will go up a little, from around 9 million last year to as much as 11 million this year, if there is a $50 dollar price cut then sale will either stagnate or at best rise a very small amount, and if there is no price cut then sales will more than likely decline, games will not affect overall PS3 sales to any great degree, and the actions of MS will likely blunt much of effect of any price drop by Sony.

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

Just a question about all the 35+ Million predictions ...

Being that Sony sold (roughly) 10 Million systems in 2008 do you really think they would be willing/able to increase their manufacturing capacity to 16+ Million units per year in 2009?

That is not a question of willingness, that is a problem of how much you are willing to deviate from your business plan. Sony's own numbers for next fiscal year has just been adjusted to:

10 mio PS3

15 mio PSP

8 mio PS2

so their business plan is set for manufacturing 10 mio units (given the way world economy is heading, that's a pretty bold plan to sell the same number of units and pretty much iimplies a considerable price drop sometimes this year to achieve these numbers).

That's the prediction for the end of this fiscal years(ending march).

28 millions at the end of this years. I simply don't see them cutting the price this years.

i simply dont see how they wont cut the prices this year. there hasnt been a price drop since 2007 and they are real close to making a profit. you think they are just gonna sit back and let microsoft keep on gaining? maybe they will hold on till the summer and by then the 360 might be 9 million ahead and then cut the price.

If the demand is there then yes. they must have been making way more than that during the PS2's peak years. And if its 10 million for a $400 system then I don't think 15+ million for a $300 system is out of the question.

You are wrong. Read the Sony fiscal report just issued before posting nonsense.

*sigh*

Go to page 8, forecast for FY08, which end this march

See something familiar?

So, 3 months into their fiscal year they reduce the price of a console and begin work on doubling their production capacity on the assumption that they can sell all their units?

Beyond that, I'm not sure you can assume that Sony is on track to sell 10 Million PS3's in 2009 at a price of $400 ... According to this thread ( http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=58515 ) the PS3 is already tracking 15% below its 2008 numbers where it just broke 10 Million.

Yes. SONY is in a position right now where they need to stop caring about marketshare and start thinking about their profitabiity. Cutting the production capacity of the PS3 while keeping the same price will permit them to have about the same revenue but lower expense.

9 million PS3 sold at 400$ give 3.6 billions. To have the same revenue the PS3 would need to sell 12 million at 300$ with the added expense of producing 3 more million unit.

9 millions unit sold is plenty enough to maintain the viability of the platform while at the same time starting to turn a profit for SONY.
