Forums - Gaming - Halo - what's so great about it?

I know it's all personal oninion and what-not, but Call of Duty 3 better than a Halo game? Play Halo 1 (or any halo really) on Legendary and COD 3 on veteran and you'll see why Halo is better. Hands down. The first Halo is still my fav single-player fps. The COD series is good, but COD 3, especially on the higher difficulties is a cheap, frustrating mess.

I played through the Halo games recently and I too am baffled by their success. In Halo CE I enjoyed the campaign but the slow movement speeds, disgustingly overpowered plasma pistol, slowly charging shields, non-stop corridor environments, lack of boss battles, dimwitted buddy A.I., an online experience that relied on software provided by GameSpy instead of Live, etc... made me look at the reviews and scratch my head. While Halo 2 was a major improvement, Halo 3 just feels like a lazy effort on the part of Bungie.

Back when I bought a X360, the very first thoughts I had were "hope this does not RROD on me" and "finally I'll be able to play Halo". But, after some minutes playing the game - around hal a hour to be precise - I realized the game was no better than others FPS that I was playing at time, like Call of Duty 3. The missions were lame and the feeling I get was that I was playing a game made from a book or a movie, made in a hurry. Yeah, the storyline is great and using the bayonnet gun (eh forget its name) was nice also, but nothing more.

Then I tried to play the original XBox Halos to see if they're any better. Halo 2 ran smooth on the X360 but it hadn't the assault rifle so the game failed to me, altough was intersting to see the brutes appear for the first time. The original Halo has its framerate owned on the X360 so I got the PC version, but mouse and keyboard didn't help on any way to make me perceive some value which justifies like what, ~8 million per title?

I haven't really played any FPS from 5th generation, so I was wondering that perhaps the game brought some innovation to FPS games that I was already used to. In which aspect the Halo series are so great anyway?

I think the problem is that you're used to playing this generation's games, and now you're goign back to a launch title from last gen, hoping for it to wow you. Halo CE doesn't stack up well judged 1-1 against current titles. However, when it released, it was far and away the most amazing game people had seen. The best FPS that had come out to date which also incorporated vehicles well, and had an amazing number of multiplayer options? Campain Co-Op and 4 player split screen on huge amazing maps? We're spoiled now, but when Halo:CE first came out, it was an epic leap.

For a start you played them in the wrong order... Halo CE grabbed me and I was hooked thereafter

When Halo CE came out on the orignal Xbox it blew anything that was then available on consoles out of the water. It was epic.

Anyone heard if the rumour of achievemnets coming for xbox originals is true? id love to get 1000 points for doing everything possible on Halo CE!

Exactly. If you play new games and then play Halo CE, it's hard to get past the dated graphics... but if for those of us who played Halo:CE back in the day, its a different story.

Ok here is what the Halo series revolutionized:

It made FPS the most popular by far genre of game.

It has the hands down absolute best online matchmaking.

It revolutionized the melee attack.

It brought regen health to the forefront. (think no more picking up health packs)

It also brought WELL BALANCED vehicles to online play.

Well that is the kind of post I was expecting. Fair enough.

Guess I'll have to try the games on online multiplayer one day.

Still for me, everything Halo brought Gears did better (except vehicles). But that's just my opinion.

Well, when Halo first brought these things, it was what, 5 years earlier? And the soundtrack.... Halo's soundtrack is one of the greatest of all time. You find me 1 old halo player who can walk by the opening screen music without wanting to play...

1. Most popular genre by far? Is that why you always see shooters at the top of the charts? Mario Kart's projectiles don't make it a shooter-racer.

2. Of what? If you said other console games, I might agree despite not having played very many games online. But plenty of online games beat Halo, most notably Warcraft/Starcraft.

3. Press a button to hit a person? Revolutionary!

The last two I agree with.

I agree with Montana. Those are the only two actual things that Halo has accomplished (although vehicles can be argued against, too).

I dislike regenerating health, the way Halo does it. I'm more of a "very slowly regenerate, but also have health packs" guy. Something like Left 4 Dead meets Call of Duty 4 slow-regen.

So you think racers are more popular than FPS this gen ? I think you're wrong with that.

(I'm talking about consoles ONLY)

3. Press a button to hit a person? Revolutionary! You're doing it wrong. Press B button !!!

The last two I agree with.

He is reffering to the way players are ranked and matches are created based on rank and connection speeds and such.  It made online play less about getting on a single server, and getting randomly assigned teams after every round, and more about self contained matches where you and your party could be matched with different parties after every match.  It made it more into a party centric system based on skill, where the opposing team is completely different than the match before.  There is a reason that lots of games now a days are taking the matchmaking approach instead of the 'join a server' approach.

Umm... It's fun?

Am I allowed to use that answer?
