It's sort of a math riddle? I believe I"m over-thinking it. I feel so stupid...this is why I wasn't crazy about professor Layton.

A dealer bought an item for $7, sold it for $8, bought it back for $9, and sold it for $10. How much profit did she make.

1. Bought it for 7 (down 7 dollars)

2. Sold it for 8 (up 1 dollar)

3. Bought it for 9 (down 8 dollars)

4. Sold it for 10 (up 2 dollars)

I believe that's wrong.

You just simply subtract the first from the last

$10 - $7 = $3

Am I right?

Edit: I checked myself.

If they started out with $10 in their wallet, they end up with $12

This doesn't work because it ignores what happened inbetween.

Apart from the maths equation you can also simply think of what happened after dealer sold for $8 - they bought for $9, hence investing an extra dollar.
Or simply think of it as buying and selling two separate products since it doesn't really matter.
