Forums - Nintendo - This Year - Nintendo + Sega = Win???

I've posted this table before, but if you haven't seen it, it's very relevant here. If Sega seems to be cozying up with Nintendo it's because the Wii has paid off for them. They have actually produced almost exactly the same number of games but all of the big hits have been on the Wii which has to count with them because with lower development costs, these are their big moneymakers.

I'd say SEGA will be sticking close to the Wii for two reasons:

1) Sonic. Sonic sells. He sells alot. But only on the Wii nowadays, why? Well, two reasons I think. He resonates well with the Nintendo 'core', the people who only bought Nintendo Games in the GameCube era (Sonic Heroes sold 1 million + on GC). But he's also the second most iconic figure in gaming, so the casuals who buy for brand are picking up anything with Sonic on too. Plus he's got appeal to the younger market, which Nintendo seem to have a stranglehold on.

2) Lack of talent. SEGA studio's really haven't put out a 'good' game in a long time (Okay Valkyria Chronicles but it wasn't ever gonna be a big seller). On the HD consoles if your games arn't good or don't have some sort of appeal then they're gonna struggle. Last year for PS360 SEGA put out Beijing, Viking of Asregard, Golden Axe, Condemned 2 and Sonic Unleashed. I find it incredible that 3 of those are going to be million sellers (Condemned 2 deserved it), but SEGA can't really compete with most other developers on the system now.

So yeah, SEGA will like the Wii. As mentioned earlier it is ideal for most of their franchises, and lots of Nintendo fans deep down like SEGA too. They won't drop PS360 support but arn't going to be putting more investiment in, if we're honest though, it's not really a great loss.

@Grampy, what would the chart look like if you combine PS360 sales? Just curious. To SEGA PS360 is clearly just one platform (Except for random PS3 exclusives :S), but with porting costs most of the PS360 games are just one developement cycle.

EDIT: Just seen Iron Man is another PS360 million seller for SEGA last year. They get away with selling some crap 0_o.

Weird table. I know the "mega seller" and double platinum but what are those platinum sellers? According to vgchartz there is only Sega superstar tennis on 360 which have sold platinum. What are the other 4?

The Wii has delivered 1 megahit (Mario & Sonic at the Olympics 6.71M), 1 Double Platinum (Sonic and Secret Rings) and 3 Platinum, (House of Dead 2&3*, Sega Superstar Tennis and Sonic Unleashed*), and 3 Gold; the Xbox has produced two Platinum (Sega Superstar Tennis (may go dbl. plat.) Sonic the Hedgehog*), and 3 Gold; on the PS3 there have been 4 Gold, one more possible

The platinum hits don't all show on VG Chartz possibly because of missing (regional) data and not being current. They show from 800K to 940K but I had seen a report supposed to be from Sega that showed the higher figure, although it may have been shipped not sales. I'm trying to relocate the link.

In any case using VGChartz figures House of Dead Wii is at 946K, Sonic Unleased Wii is at 797K but selling 50K a week so they are sure things. The only two I would have any question about is Sonic (Xbox360) and Superstar Tennis (Wii) both at about 800K and selling <10K a week but both will probably make it eventually. But even if the report was wrong and you drop those two, the relative balance would be the same showing their Wii games far outselling their HD games.

who would have thought this in the Snes for example xD Nintendo and Sega together... awesome.

I'm actually loving sega right now. They are taking the wii super serious!!!! (lol) and they are delivering excellent games.

I just hope every single company out there realize about this and start doing the same.
