eww what the hell is wrong with japan

Japan is very different from the rest of the world right now. If you look at this weeks top 20 you see 11 of those games are on handhelds. If we look at the american numbers we see only 5 games in the top 20 are on handhelds. If you look closer you can see that every one of those handheld games are almost 2 years old. Then if you look in this weeks numbers there are 6 Wii games. Meaning 17 of the top 20 games are either on a handheld or on a Wii in Japan. Which leaves just 3 game places left for the HD consoles of which the PS3 took at 3,5 and 20. Where as again if you look at the american numbers last week you see 5 handheld games, 1 on PS2, 6 Wii games. leaving 8 HD games to fill 50% of the spots. 7 of those games are on 360 and 1 is on PS3.

Basically meaning that Japan and the west are going in different directions. The west has adopted the HD era and it is reflected in its charts, 8 of the 20 games are HD console games, 40%. Where as in Japan it amounts to just 3 of the 20 games which is just 15%.

Now the question then becomes why has Japan not taken to the HD era at the same rate as the west? Well many reason, for one Japan is one of if not thee highest cost of living country in the world, add to that the Yen is very strong at the momment. Add on top of that recession and a cultural people who save at recession times would indicate that right now people don't think its the right price at this point to buy into the HD era.

So my view is Japan is unsure if to buy into the HD era right now and are holding off until they get some more incentives i.e big title games, cheaper consoles etc.. Until then i would expect the Japanese trend to continue to decline in hardware sales while continue to buy games that at least in handheld terms are quite old.

here we go again with the everyone wants a HD system they just can't afford it argument.  Japan is usually the first to adopt things regardless of the cost, they have much higher HD penetration than the west so obviously that's not the issue.  Not only that but you do realize that 360 is cheaper than the wii right?

To me the answer is that in Japan consoles are dying, and that second place consoles have never had much success in Japan at all.  The higher selling 2nd place console in Japan is just over 5 million consoles, that's not very good.  History has shown us that the the west can support 2 or 3 consoles with huge sales, and europe is a quickly growing market.  Japan has not shown it to us, they choose a console and stick with it while 2nd place just does OK.

Another thing is that when you're looking at 1 week like you did you're gonna get less HD console games because they are more front loaded.

Its not an argument, it is based on consumer trends. For example you say "2nd place consoles have never had much success in Japan". That simply isn't true. If you look at the generations you see it isnt true. 3rd gen Famicom versus the master system. By 1984 it had sold over 2.5m units. Not bad for only being on sale a year. While the Master System had sold 1m, again not bad. Then in the 4th Gen you had the Snes and the Megadrive, while i do not know the numbers i know that the Snes won and the Megadrive sold enough to spawn some of the most recognised characters in the world let alone Japan i.e Sonic which makes me believe it was also succesful. Then we have the 5th gen. Playstation obviously sold loads with VGC having it at next to 20m in Japan. The Nintendo 64 sold onext to 6m, while it is still far behind the PS1 near 6m units is very good. Then the 6th gen sees obviously the PS2 sell shead loads having sold 22m in japan to date. While the Gamecube sold near 5m and Dreamcast sold nearly 3m, both were discontinued long long time ago. Meaning the PS2 was far ahead but still a further 8m consoles were sold in Japan that were not PS2's.

And that is the point, while each gen has a clear winner (with this one being the Wii) the difference is the technology between all three formats is very different from the level playing fields of the previous gens. You have Sony doing the Blu-Ray angle, the Wii doing the interactive angle and the 360 doing the we do a bit of both cheaper angle.

But history shows while there is always a clear winner there are also alternatives for people to choose. And i point to the bit of research posted on here the other day saying the PS3 is tracking in the same numbers as the Gamecube. Thus showing that people are not buying consoles for their HD capabilities they are buying them for other reasons such as innovation, fun factor but more importantly as i mentioned, price. I have no doubt whatsoever that if the Wii and PS3 had their prices switched over the PS3 would sell more then the Wii, so its my view from talking to my Japanese friends that they simply won't move into the HD era until they feel they are getting what they feel is value for money.

The games are a reflection of what people are buying this week i.e now, what they bought 1 month ago, 3 months ago, 3 years ago makes no difference to todays trends. The chart shows what people are buying. If you look at that chart only 5 of the 30 are new games. Which means only 16% of the chart are sales from new games. If that makes any sense.

uhh, low numbers for WKC and PS3 make me depressed :(

It's doing pretty good, actually.  In comparison to past Level 5 titles, at least:

Japan is falling back to earth.

Within a couple of weeks the two HD consoles will be in 4 digit territory and Japan will be again a non-factor in the global HD gaming market place.

The ps3 should stay around ~15 k units for at least a few more months.  Yakuza 3, Stret Fighter IV, Resident Evil 5 (though this series is dying in Japan), and the FFXIII demo should see to that.

I have added Dark Chronicle/ Dark Cloud 2:

Very good Xbox 360 hardware numbers!

The only Year-Over-Year increase among the 3.

My Gaming Setup

dreadful sales for the wii, for the dominant console in Japan... honestly i thought there would be a transition from the DS to Wii by this year. Seems not, and thats very depressing...

31000 is low by all means, and something must change this year, hopefully MH, FF, and a couple of other titles shall boost that figure, but its looking really grim in Japan.

Sales aren't looking too good in JPN...

4 ≈ One

Low numberw overall, Fallout3 has a ok debut, expected a bit more from Naruto, Wkc 10k hopefully it wont go lower than 1k.
