Forums - Sony - PS3: JRPG success!

JRPG developers are keeping RPGs away from the PS3 because Microsoft gave better promises to some of them in the beginning and because Wii swept up the rest of the console JRPGs.

So far there hasn't been any reason for this not to change.

You need to put more of the 360 RPGs like Zoids and Spectral Force 3.

Also, you need to put WKC in and state that Eternal Sonata on PS3 only has Japanese sales.

And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

yeah WKC have sold better than all 360 games in japan.

where they matter the most but we don't know how the ps3 sell jrpg outside japan yet.

we only have one title wkc, we wont get a better picture til FF13 Versus and FF13 come out.

LO has sold .11million in a year and some change. Doesnt seem like it will be growing anymore than that. WKC has sold 400k+ within a months time. That is quadruple LO sales. If PS3 and 360 have at least the same amount of JRPG fans in america, then WKC will most assuredly sell at least 1million.

You conveniently ignore that Lost Odyssey is considered a minor classic, "the game that FF12 should have been", in large parts of the JRPG community. WKC on the other hand has so far gotten terrible reviews and poor word of mouth.

WKC won't sell a million+ worldwide. I see no reason why Sony would give this game a huge marketing campaign in the west, and thus I don't expect it to do any better than ToV/Disgaea/VC. Unlike WKC those are good games, yet they didn't sell.

Anyway, it's no big secret that japanese devs hate the PS3 because of the high development costs. And with the PS3 selling poorly worldwide they really have no reason to reconsider. Japanese devs tried their best to make the 360 popular in Japan this generation, but japanese gamers turned their back on the system.

As a depressing direct result of this, the Wii is unfortunately going to be the JRPG king this generation.

as now i doubt that because they are getting dragon quest X and thats only huge in japan.

Sry but your investigations suck and your predictions even more.

It doesn't matter anymore, DQ X is going to the Wii, so almost all RPG's are going to the Wii from now on.

Now the ones for the PS3 so far....

Valkyria Chronicles: 0.34 million
Disgaea 3: 0.20million
Eternal Sonata:0.06million
Enchanted Arms: 0.16million

What does this Data tell us?

This data tells us that over 2 years after the PS3 launched there's 1 good JRPG (which is a SRPG) on the system. The brand Playstation as THE place to be for J-games is totally gone.

I honestly don't understand how you can make a thread titled "PS3: JRPG success" and then come with this list. The crying about how games would fare so much better if they were on PS3 and how developers are stupid to make games for 360 makes it even sadder, cause fact is that 360's JRPG library is a lot better than PS3's.

as now i doubt that because they are getting dragon quest X and thats only huge in japan.

Ignorance is bliss, isn't it?

Fragile, Tales of Ten, Kizuna, Arc Rise Fantasia, Valhalla Knights, Musramasa: Demon Blade, Dynamic Slash, FF: Crystal Bearers, oh and indeed Dragon Quest X. And that's only what's announced so far. As far as consoles go it's clear that Wii will be the king, ironically for the same reason you say devs shouldn't make games for 360: Japanese userbase.

That's not JRPG success...

That's... smaller JRPG failure.

RPGs need to really be multi-plat or on the Wii to make some money i'd think.

The Wii will get most RPG's, I'm not sure if it'll be like the PS2 as the Japanese market has changed too much to handhelds, so although most console RPG's will be on the Wii the focus is always going to be on DS and PSP. We've not really seen how RPG's sell on the Wii yet either, but with third parties struggle to launch anything other then Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy on the system I can see the devs just sticking to the DS :/.

As for PS3? Well, it ain't getting no more exclusives, unless they're low budget stuff like Cross Blade. Saying that not all the RPG devs will be ignoring the PS360, it's going to have a big 'global' RPG market once Final Fantasy XIII hits both consoles and Versus hits PS3. You're not going to see the quantity hosted by the PS2 / DS / Wii, but as seems to be the way with all PS360 developement, it'll be a bigger focus on one big huge seller hit then lots and lots of RPG's.

I do hope the PS3 gets a few good RPG's every year, I own a Wii and DS so my RPG fix is there but I'm personally struggling to see either system give me an RPG experience my PS2 didn't (Even if the world ends with you was AMAZING).
