Why?
Never argue with idiots
They bring you down to their level and then beat you with experience

because they post a 300 million lost and are just branding on ericsson part.
its falling behing it competition, looking like the next be motorola.
motorola had 21% market share but started doing tons of razr over and over, nokia samsung lg crushed them. now they are less than 10% and have similar millionary looses.
sony ericsson have lost it camera phone quality crown to nokia > samsung > LG.
and music phones too nokia, samsung and lg have better sound quality now.
they are living off sony branding their phones are decent but the competition is better.
market reacted they are not loosing market share yet though.
also they owned UIQ, nokia announced s60 would have touch screen support. UIQ is now disbanning.
The first thing they will slash or better sell, are the financial services the most unprofitable business for Sony, and probably the least sustainable in view of the finacial crisis.
As for Sonyericsson they won't cut it, it's executive vice president already spoke of an economic restructuring (more job cuts) and a focus on the high-end smartphones market two days ago.

Put out too many movies at once though and you screw yourself... because people only have so much money... then you canibalize your "full price sales".. because retailers aren't going to just quadruple the number of blu-rays they buy because you quandruple your releases. OR You're forced to keep your movies at full price longer... which is going to frustrate the consumer who might just opt for the cheaper DVD options if they feel like Blu-ray movies never come down in price. Tricky stuff that. |
I think retail would be more than happy to have another Iron Man, Dark Knight, or Spiderman 3. Great movies are good for everyone.

I don't have time to go over every point as I have to go out to dinner, but I will say this
Sony Ericsson have only recently been losing money and, in the scheme of things, compared to the losses incurred by the other Sony divisions are relatively minor and they have already taken action to cut almost 1/2 billion in costs.
I believe they have diluted their product pool with far too many models, but they have mentioned in their report that their Walkman & Cybershot branded phones are strong. There is no chance in hell I would buy an LG or Samsung over a Sony Ericsson, anyone who does is a fool, their user interfaces are terrible.
If the focus their product range it will reduce R&D, leverage off the popularity of the Walkman & Cybershot phones, plus there is high demand for their PDAs like the X1 and they should be fine. They are pretty much the least of Sony's worries as a division.

Interesting. I just hope Stringer can come through, and get Sony back on its feet.
I hope that old Old Guard gets their asses handed to them. Stringer seems to be a astute businessman, they are holding his plans back. He should really do something forceful. Not rash, but forceful. Send a message. Anyways, hope he stays.

I can't comment on the rest of the company, but I will say that the PS3 lost so much because they forgot if you're selling something at a loss, the point is to focus on what makes up for it. In short, they forgot selling the blades is more important than selling the razors.
Basically the should have been pumping out games for the PS3 from the beginning, not just depending on people to flock to the games and systems as they did before. Nintendo did it with the first years of the Wii and DS (just slowing down after a couple years), and their systems sold at a profit. If Sony followed that gaming model, they could have easily offset the PS3 losses, and even reduced the loss this year.
A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.
