Forums - Nintendo - The Numbers have Spoken - Wii is the New PS2!!

eh no the Wii+PS3 would be the new PS2. If you do not touch a huge part of gamers at all and most highly rated games are not on your system you are not comparable to the PS2.

While the PS2 may have had a few more great games in its first 2 years, the vast majority of the games that people associate with the PS2's amazing library came from years 3 through 6 ...

Being that we don't know what kind of library the Wii will build over the next 4 years it is impossible to say that it will or will not match the PS2's library in terms of quantity or quality of titles.

Selling like yes...but not being played as much as the ps2...

So wait.... the Wii has a higher attach ratio than the PS2 over the same time frame (actually giving the PS2 an advantage because it had 7 months longer in Japan for the way I worked it out) but people just don't play their games?

I would have thought that if people are not interested in the games they would stop buying more.

sorry dude PS2 i still most played console. I can give you link

Oh right, you mean that article where the Wii is over double the time spent than the PS3.

Yes that would be what is called useless evidence, because it happens to be the 8th year of the PS2 compared to the second for the Wii.... which means comparing 43+ million PS2 users, most having had considerably more time to build up their libraries, to around 17 million Wii owners who at most have had 2 years to build a library.

No, dude they counted after all 3 consoles were launched. Don't have to be so upset dude. PS2 just has much better libary than wii. PS3 is played much more in Germany, France, England and Australia :D

Yes.... I know.

You will have to post a link, but if it is indeed the Neilsen survey then these are the facts:

1. It was a survey using a sample of people, similar to what VGChartz does to find out sales (except and even smaller sample of the market than VGC uses)

2. It was console usage for the USA only, during 2008.

3. The size of the PS2 userbase during that time was between 40 million at the start of the year,  and 43 million users by the end, each with an average of 11 games..... so say 41.5 million users times 11 games

4. The size of the Wii userbase during that time was between 7 million at the start of the year, and 17 million at the end of the year, each with an average of about 6.5-7.5 games (about 6.5 at the start of the year, it's higher now)..... so say 12 million users times 7 games.

----

Do you see the difference?

If you hadn't noticed.... in that same survey, the original Xbox had more time spent on it than the PS3 in 2008.... that is because it had userbase of 14.5 million or so, and an average games per person of more like 10 than the PS3s 6-7

I am sure they counted same numbers of wiis and PS2s sold. And lucky for wii that it was only US which was counted. In Europe (expesily in England ) Wii is collecting more dust than my history book. I think DS is most played in Europe. And lots of people who bought PS2 are using their PS2 for DVD movies not games. So wii got beaten by half DVD player and half gaming console

No they did not.... it was an extrapolation of a small sample to represent the whole, otherwise why the fuck do you think the original Xbox beat the PS3, the console died 2 years ago so hardly any new games are bought, yet it was played more the the PS3.

And you really don't know where you are going regarding Europe.... in general playtime is lower across the board for all consoles but the difference in percentage between consoles will not differ too much.
I would say Europe will show slightly more bias towards the PS2 and 3, and bias against the Xbox 360... and neutral with the Wii (although the percentage will drop for Wii due to the bias towards the PS consoles, the Wii will likely take the lead as the most played 7th gen console because the X360 will fall further)

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

The PS2's strength was essentially in Japanese-developed games except for a few EA games and Sony's first parties.

I don't see the difference.

The PS2 dominated game wise, this is something the Wii has not yet done. The incredible support the PS2 recieved now seems to be spread out between the Wii and 360/PS3, the latter in the form of multiplats.

I haven't bought a game for my Wii since Brawl, mainly because of a severe lack of money, but also because of games like Sins of a Solar Empire, Mass Effect, Rainbow Six Vegas 2, Medieval 2 Total War, and old standbys like Counter-Strike and Zeus: Master of Olympus.

But this year I'm looking forward to a lot of Wii games. =D Hopefully it'll get a bit more playtime than it did last year. =D

The PS2's software dominance didn't exist to that degree in its first two years - and, notably, it didn't have Nintendo titles.

for sales, yes

but the difference is PS2 had amazing games, including awesome 3rd party support. Nintendo has good 1st party but no 3rd party games.

Lol, that was good for a laugh. I've never seen you use "fuck" before. (or any swear, even)

OT:It's hard to tell how the PS3 will end up in America, but it seems like it'll be between the GC and Xbox. Just see the graph below - you'll notice it flared up in sales summer 08, but once it died down, it's back on track with the last gen consoles.

http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php?cons1=GC&reg1=America&cons2=PS3&reg2=America&cons3=XB&reg3=America&weeks=120&weekly=1

The Xbox had a great 3rd year, too (Halo 2), will be interesting to see if the PS3 can keep up.

Oh, and to those comparing the Wii's library to the PS2's - yeah, maybe it won't be able to match it. Still, at least give it more time, you're comparing a system with a library 9 yrs strong to a 2yr old.

I already own more Wii games than I do PS2 games.

So as of right now I think Wii's library > PS2's.

But of course that's just me. I didn't really like the PS2.
