@OP Because everybody says so.
A little update on Amazon's current ratings :
(The poor guy who gave it 3 stars got trashed by the other reviewers).

Which is why no one ever dares to say it is bad
Not really of course, but the game really is great.

Yeah, make it a clone of other SRPG's, good idea.
Good luck, It'll probably be discontinued before it ever hits a bargain price.

If the enemy couldn't shoot back, then the game would be way to easy and you could just run your unit behind their tank and blow it up without having to worry about being killed.
Without a grid based setup, you can't "block" enemy movement (and they can't block yours) which the counterfire is supposed to replace. By setting up a bunch of shocktroopers/tanks in a row, you can create a wall that the enemy can't run through without dieing.

I enjoy SRPG's period...
I found Operation Darkness for $19.99 (metacritic 42 last time I checked) and I still enjoy it.
I just wish VC was coming to the 360, it alone isn't enough for me to even look at a PS3.

If you really play the game, you'll understand why that interception fire is absolutely necessary. Otherwise, scouts would be able to cross the map in one turn, walking up to everyone's face to pop their heads off. Tanks would also be defenseless, as people would be able to walk right up to their weak point.
It's an entirely different game, really. I love Advance Wars, but I don't see that system working with the first person gameplay they adapted here.
edit: Damn, nordlead beat me to it, I'm slow.

I only had ONE negative aspect and that was the unlimited counter-attacks when it's your or the AI's turn. They should have borrowed the classic turn based gameplay for counter attacks from Advance Wars (or any other game with that system).
@nordlead
I'm just saying I don't like that piece of the gameplay and I think it hurts in the strategy parts of the game
Actually Advance Wars (all of them) had recieved better reviews and sold better than Valkyria Chronicles, so your arguments are meaningless

So whenever there's a ps3 around, you close your eyes...hmmm

Isn't advanced Wars on the DS and GBA? Pretty hard to compare sales figures between games that have an install base almost 5 times greater than the PS3 exclusive. As for better reviews, well you saw the amazon reviews. 68 of 71 user reviews gave the game a perfect 5 rating.
Because Sega made it. and it wasn't made by Sonic Team. =) Thank goodness they were too busy digging the grave for Sonic. X_x
