Ok for the sake of everyone here look

october- (first full month after pricecut)
360- 450k
PS3- 300k

December-
360- 1600k
PS3- 740k

The PS3 recieved a boost from october to december of 246%
The 360 recieved a boost of 355%

now, even if the 360 come out a bit higher in the end, the PS3 could have less % drops.

jeez people, use math before you accuse someone of not knowing how to.

Now do that for the Wii and PSP which saw a similar % drop this week.

The Wii is supply contsrained more right now, its sales are supply driven so doing a comparison would not work since sales depend on shipments not consumer buying patterns.

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

Let's see.... I predicted how the number would be yesterday... How crappy did I do? http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/post.php?id=1678508

Wii: 177K (Yay! Just 4K off. Real is 181K)

X360: 103K (What the? SPOT ON!)

DS: 80K (8K off... Not too shabby. Within the 10% :D)

PsP: 62K (2K off... Pretty awesome)

Ps3: 58K (14K off.... It sold 72K... That's 1/4 higher than I expected.)

Overall, I'm happy with my predictions.

Still, I'm shocked at Ps3!

Drops in %

Wii: 269>181 = 32% drop

X360: 137>103 = 25% drop

DS:  89>88 = 1% drop

Ps3: 77>72 = 6% drop

PsP: 82>64K = 22% drop

It had a far smaller drop than the other consoles...

Oh, and Tombi (someone has probably done it by now though).

October:

Wii: 1050K

PsP: 280K

December:

Wii: 3162K

PsP: 915K

Increases:

Wii: 201%

PsP: 226%

Whoa! I did not expect that...

Its probably the KZ 2 hype that is keeping the PS3 pretty much afloat this time around and I approve of that.

If you go all over the internets, you will see confessions of hardcore gamers saying I picked up a PS3 today or Man it is now time to get one, etc.

The next step is the casual, middle gaming crowd.

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

what? people are still wonder if the DS died? OMG!!!

It just sold over 3 million in December, broke all kinds of records and your wondering if it is supply constrained?!?

Yes it is, logic allows for nothing else. Next week could be the same, I dont expect them to be normal until last week of Jan or Feb......

It doesn't make sense that the PS3 match the sales from the previous year after the holidays when during the holidays it was down by ~15% YOY. Hmm, maybe its the post christmas sales clearing excess PS3 stock in Europe combined with the roughly 10-15k residual boost from WKC in Japan thats doing it maybe?

Tease.

Jon - But you must look at seasonal trends before arguing what you just said.

Feel free to look at the 360 in Japan. It flies in the face of your argument. It's entirely effected by seasonality, despite the marketshare. It's seeing very similar drops to the PS3 and Wii, despite a much smaller userbase than the PS3 in America.

Feel free to look at the same week in 2008. The X360 had a similar sales base as the PS3 does this week, but it's drop was about 3 times higher for the same week. Even the PS3 last year suffered a higher drop.

So I believe your argument is without merit. Just because it had a smaller % increase from Oct-Dec does not mean that it should have a significantly smaller drop coming out of Christmas. Should it drop slightly less? Sure. But the volume that we're seeing is Atypical.

the 360 in japan is not good to compare anything to. Its numbers are so small % changes can be huge with little actual change. I mean, if it sell 5k less next week... it just lost 50% of its sales... kinda volitile if you know what I mean.

This also has nothing to do with Marketshare, the Cube had the least marketshare, but always got huge holiday boost (at least its first 3 years or so)

The Wii in Japan is actually kinda weird right now, but it seems to be selling like the Gamecube x3.

Oups...sorry I mean his name not his avatar.

its just the post christmas slow down. DS is probably sold out all over too.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Second low sales in a row for DS, what is happening?
