The engine is built, the marketing is done, there's no manufacturing costs - I'd say DLC is relatively cheap compared to games. For something the size/scope of Knothole Island? 100k? 150k?
Remember that studies show DLC helps push more game sales as well to a slight degree, so that's profit too. |
Even more, DLC can generate revenues from people who bough the game second-hand after (not immedialty of course, otherwise the last owner won't have the opportunity to play the DLC).
EX: I bought SWFU because I was unsure about it ("thanks" to the media...) and I liked it ! That is why I bought the Jedi Temple DLC. So technically, Lucasarts gained some money on a game I didn't initally owned.

I did the same thing. I bought Crackdown used and liked it so much, I wanted to pay the developer since they made nothing off me when I bought it secondhand. So I bought the DLC to make up for it a little bit. I felt the game was so good they needed a little something.
I do this a lot when I buy used games. I try to buy new so the developer gets a cut, but occassionally the deal is just too goood to pass up, so I try and buy some DLC from them.
