Forums - Sales - PS3 will overtake XBox 360 by December 2009 in worldwide console sales.

@ Jereel Hunter

What? outperform DVD? Based on what definition of outperform?

Continues to outperform DVD taking equal time frames. Blu-Ray in 2008 outperformed DVD compared to 1999 sales (both software and hardware), so I mean Blu-Ray to continue to outperform DVD in 2009 compared to how well DVD performed in 2000. Rome wasn't built in a day.

As for the "right ingredients," I'm assuming 1 major ingredient is terrorists focussing all their hate of the West on Microsoft, blowing up all 360 production facilities

No, but we do need more balanced media reporting in the United States. Much less misleading data, misinformation and FUD. I think that may happen in 2009.

That is a awful lot of "will"

Maybe he is taking up Crazzyman's slack? I don't know how else to explain it.

With all the negativity, I thought I might just as well share some more balanced perspectives. As I said, I consider it a possibility for the given reasons.

Important will be a cheaper slimline PS3, so that Sony can finally start to push the platform they way it deserves. For instance selling at Wii levels early on Sony could never have afforded, so until they are near the break even point on the hardware it will be a balancing act for Sony.

So the PS3 doubling its userbase (built in 2+ years) during a recession year is a balanced perspective?

By the way, your "Sony couldn't have afforded" argument doesn't work. They could have afforded it if the PS3 sold OK at 500-600 € as Sony was expecting.

What do you mean? The console sold OK, it outsold the much overhyped 360 sales taking equal time frames.

And no, Sony couldn't have afforded selling at Wii like levels early on (at least not at 500 or 600 dollars, maybe at 800 to 900 dollars they could have). That would have costed billions extra without enough software sales revenue to balance the hardware investment costs.

That flies in the face of the sale projections Sony gave for the PS3 at launch. Both Nintendo and Sony put the expected sales of the PS3 and the Wii at 6 million for fiscal year 2006.

The PS3 didn't have Wii like sales but, Sony expected it too.

yeah, i don't think so. not that i wouldn't love to see that happen but i think the best ps3 fans can hope for is that 2009 ps3 sales are greater than 2009 x360 sales. ..and even that is highly dependent on sony's ablility to give a price cut which may or may not be possible.

...but yeah, i wish you the best of luck on that prediction.

Right so Sony purposefully made their console way too expensive and being in 3rd place is just all according to plan right? Great business move. The fact that they fired the creator of playstation should give you a clue.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

wow i think thats the first ps3 fanboy i have seen on this site! anyway ps3 can only do this if it had 100$ price drop in amerca and 100 in europe aswell. if it doesnt do that then no chance! the gap will widen until sony cut the price.

You must have a strange definition of PS3 fanboyism.

lol where's your source? :P

/sarcasm btw

Failure of Epic Proportions.

Sony expected 5 to 6 million units sold to retail by the 1st of April 2007. That's something they could afford, yet expensive.

The Wii sold a little short of 6 million to retail by that time as well. But later Wii sales sky rocketed when production of the console went full steam, that's something Sony couldn't have afforded to maintain on par with sales wise. (Wii's are cheap and relatively easy to manufacture, profitable)
