Munkeh111 said: Sounds right. I still dont get how the last shipment figures we have for the PS2 are at 140m, yet sales here are 124m last time I checked, I assume it must just be that VGC does not track some of the smaller markets that the PS2 has done quite well in |
How can you not have read at least 1 of my posts about this. I am sure I have never directed one at yourself, but at least 10 times I have explained about the PS2 error to other people (a couple of them 2 or 3 times each)

First of all, whichever Sony employee claimed 140 million made a mistake, he was meant to be citing the previous quarters shipment figures, which had just pushed the PS2 over 130 million (this was for the quarter ending last March)
As of September they are arounf 135 million.
The problem with that figure however is that it is made up by me adding 2 different types of figures: "production shipments" and "sales" (to retail sales) of the console from this website
http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/data/bizdatatitle_e.html
Which is not a very fair way to go about it for 2 reasons.
1. Adding those 2 different types of "shipment" together actually counts some consoles twice, because they are produced (prodution shipments) before they are sold to retailers.... so perhaps a 1 million difference there.
2. the 117 million + figure mad up of production shipments, is basically the number that were manufactured before March 2007.... this brings up the problem of it including replacement consoles sent out to those PS2 owners who sent in their faulty console from 2000 - 2005..... now not all faulty consoles sent in for that period will have been simply replaced, at least half could have been repaired, but it still leaves a decent figure of PS2s that are counted, despite no one actually buying them.... I would estimate at least 5 million.
Thus the actual number of PS2s sold to retail will be short of 130 million at the end of September, and probably around 133 million as of now.

Your point still stands.... VGC is likely missing a few million in PS2 sales due to obscure markets, but I just want to make sure no one assumes the PS2 is over 140 million.... in fact in actual sales, the PS2 will likely still be below 130 million, because the PS2 is selling in such a large number of markets worldwide, it will have considerably more shelf stock that the current gen consoles. (VGC probably still missing a good 5 million sales though)
