Let me put my above point more simply. Publishers in general (and not just video game publishers, but any media publisher) work off of target demographics. That is how they pigeonhole things and manage risk analysis.
As such, it's natural for them to try to figure out what demographic the Wii appeals to. As I said, look at how the demographic discussion has ping ponged around: It's for kids! Wait no, it's for soccer moms! Wait, it's for non gamers! Wait no, it's for all girls, who may also be non gamers!
The reason they can't figure out which demographic the Wii appeals to is that it doesn't appeal to a demographic. At least, not in the way they mean it, unless it "everyone" is a demographic. The concept of a product that simultaneously appeals to little girls age 6-12 and elderly men age 60+, with everything in between, simply doesn't compute. They don't operate this way. They don't know what to do with it.
That's why we've seen so many publishers seemingly unable to decide who the heck this Wii thing is for.
