Forums - Sony - Why I think the PS3 won't be discontinued (and why I may be wrong)

Sony overreached, and tried to use a CONSOLE as the driver for new adoption by consumers...that failed, as a vast majority of the brd players on the market are ps3, and while brd players did better this holiday season, than last year, it's still way way off the mark. If sony continues to post huge losses, changes will have to be made.

2-Strictly speaking, the gaming division would probably be much more profitable by making games for the Wii, DS and 360... In dire times, it's possible Sony will consider doing that, but pretty much a last resort as it would kill one of Sony's valuable brands.

This would mean accepting defeat. And thts NOT going to happen. Its like MS making software for Linux :)

They make office for Macs... just a thought

Currently dreaming of: DKC4 or Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (classic 2D platformers) for WiiWare, Smash Bros. for DSi, New Super Mario World for DSi, a Wii remake or true sequel of Final Fantasy Tactics.

One down, hopefully more awesomeness to come.

What is with the Japanese Banks anyway? They were supposed to step in and save the Yen a while ago!

The idea of Sony being more profitable making games for Nintendo or Microsoft systems is disturbing to me.

Except that I might be able to play the next Team ICO game on my 360 or even my Wii, which would make it all worth it.

Obviously this topic is troubling a lot of souls.

We must not forget that Sony as a whole does not care if the PS3 is "beaten", they are not in this for the bragging rights, they are in the business for money.  Sony probably could have beaten the 360 by now if they had undercut the price of the 360, but it means nothing if it digs them a financial hole that they can never get out of.  Sure they want the PS3 to win but only insofar as the winner in a console war is usually the most profitable.  So while i agree that making software for the competition is a slim possibility, selling to an install base of 100 million versus 30 million (for example) is likely to net you far more profit and that is ultimately why will guide Sony's decisions.

The PS3 will not be discountinued.

There are just too many ways for Sony to drive it back to profitability.

The most braindead one is just raise the price to a point of profitability. Yes, they will sell less units, but at least they will not lose money anymore.

Sony has already writen-off any prospect of dominance in this gen. So losing money in order to gain dominant share makes no sense at this point. Sony should just stop subsidizing the consumers and start charging a fair price for their excellent product.

Prediction made on 11/1/2008:

Q4 2008: 27M xbox LTD, 20M PS3 LTD . 2009 sales: 11M xbox,  9M PS3

discontinue lmao

op you been spending to much time reading dumb posts, to even warrant writing a rebuttal to such idiocy is shame on you.

I definitely DO NOT see the ps3 being discontinued. But there is a good chance some studios will be scaled back or eliminated. Sony is in trouble here and it's going to worse before it gets better. They need an influx of cash ASAP so they can do a price cut and sell more consoles.

Once again.....why do people think Sony will give up on a $400 console which is coming from a brand which has sold 260 million? Cost's of the console are constantly decreasing and they are a BUSINESS. Sony will not just give up on something which cost them billions.

Studios being cut back? Yes but studios being closed down? No
