We must not forget that Sony as a whole does not care if the PS3 is "beaten", they are not in this for the bragging rights, they are in the business for money.  Sony probably could have beaten the 360 by now if they had undercut the price of the 360, but it means nothing if it digs them a financial hole that they can never get out of.  Sure they want the PS3 to win but only insofar as the winner in a console war is usually the most profitable.  So while i agree that making software for the competition is a slim possibility, selling to an install base of 100 million versus 30 million (for example) is likely to net you far more profit and that is ultimately why will guide Sony's decisions.
