Forums - Sales - Something to Ponder ... PS3vsWii Software million sellers

LOL!

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

So the Wii, which has slightly more than twice the PS3 console sales, has slightly less than twice the million sellers.

This despite the gripes for the past 18 months that the console is loaded with shovelware, and the dearth of AAA title for the last 8 months.

Doesn't sound so awful to me.

It would also be more telling to check the actual sales, and not merely the platinum rating. For example, are the Wii platinum titles selling as many copies on average as the PS3 platinums, which would mean its doing slight worse compared to console sales, or are they selling more per title, which could mean the Wii is actually overperforming compared to the PS3.

Number of Million Sellers:
Wii: 41 (39 without Wii Sports and Wii Play)
PS3: 24

Units Sold
Wii: 179.4 Million (118 Million)
PS3: 53.2 Million

Units per Million Seller
Wii: 3.38 Million (3.03 Million)
PS3: 2.21 Million

Thanks. So in games sold (of the million sellers), the Wii is more than triple the PS3 games sold, well ahead of the user base ratio. I doubt you can blame this on the $10 cost difference, especially since (I'd bet) PS3 owners tend on average to have higher household incomes (simply given the price difference in the consoles).

I just finished the software-sales per unit-month calculation for North America for 2008

nice pondering, though!
Although I can't quite agree with you on most of the points.
But I would like to add a bit of fuel to the fire.
I know four older Wii users who either bought the system for Wii Fit, or Wii Sports only, and have no desire to buy any other game for the system.
Completely and utterly anecdotal evidence, i know, but it leaves me pondering as to just how many Wii owners out there feel the same way...

Oh my. What a funny thread. Has someone pointed out all the million sellers that aren't listed as such because of the lack of others data yet?

Anyways, it's important to note that until now, sports games on Wii haven't been hitting a million. Those games are now set to hit that mark (the 09 editions of Fifa, Madden, Pro Evo and the wrestling one). So once annually released games become million sellers, the Wii million seller list should jump quite a bit.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

And I for one am sick of taking up the slack for all those old people just so the Wii can have a good attach rate!

lol, i like the way Ps3/Xbox360 fans do it:

firstly, the Wii does not sell software

changes to, Wii only sells mini-game collections

then Mario Kart, Zelda, Mario Galaxy, SSBB, Wii Fit pass 5 million and suddenly Wii only sells only 1st party software

next, Guitar Hero, Sonic , MySims, Rayman Raving Rabbits, Resident Evil, Naruto, Ben Protector, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and so on are selling well and the slogan changes to "have the word Wii or Mario Bros." !?

i'm afraid you guys have to think of something else this time..... O.0

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^

And did they know they were going to buy Wii Fit before it existed? I'm willing to bet they will see more games that they are interested in...
