Forums - Gaming - What do you think of MMORPGs?

MMORPGs are fun because of the social aspects of the game.

If you just play alone all the time, or only with real-life friends, you won't enjoy the game. It's all about getting out there and participating in the world, being a part of it all, along with everyone else who plays.

The addiction comes from the desire to do well in dungeons, or player-vs-player activities. It's all about playing with other people, that's what makes them fun.

And, anyone who may have never played a MMORPG, do not come in here and bash them.  These games are really something you can't understand unless you've experienced them.

I love/hate MMORPGs.

They have a lot of flaws. Most of them already mentioned in the thread, but another thing I hate with MMORPGs is that players tend to be assholes - many behave very elitist and selfish lol. Even within their own guilds.

I love the atmosphere though, to be in a huge world with a big population of human players.

My first MMO was Starwars galaxics, I was on this game for like 15 hours a day at one point, I even used to phone in sick a lot so to have more time to play. Then came Everquest II, I spend 3 years of my life playing this. It started to affect my relationship with my partner so it was time to let go. I said to myself I will never take up another MMO again.

PC gaming rules.....

I've never really played one, however I am tempted to try out DC Universe when it comes out. I'm very cautious though, I don't want to become an addict... so I may just refrain. Depends what else is on the market I guess.

Will only be for summer, I doubt I'll ever bother. Hmmm.

Regnum Online, the only 'true' RvR game I've known, is fantastic despite its flaws.

You just need to look around for an MMO that suites your preferences. If you don't like Korean grindfests, don't play one.

I used to LOVE Maplestory but after level 47, it became mindless grinding with the occasional quest here and there. I used to play ROSE online too but I lost interest when I released I would follow the same pattern again.

MMORPG's feel more like a second jobs than games to me.

Pixel Art can be fun.

I used to play both Ultima Online(Great Lakes) and Asheron's Call(darktide) extensively.

I trialed or briefly played: Anarchy Online, World of Warcraft (30 day trial), and Dark Age of Camelot.

I think they can be fantastic games, but I simply got tired of the leveling conveyor belt and insane timesink that most mmorpgs seem to be. UO is the exception to the rule for me, with it probably being one the best multiplayer experiences I've ever had. They're just not for me anymore. I haven't played any for a long time, nor do I intend to play them ever again.

Demon's Souls Official Thread  | Currently playing: Left 4 Dead 2, LittleBigPlanet 2, Magicka

Mostly lack..

storylline
skill
depth

That's crap. If you want a story then play an MMORPG that has atleast some focus on the story, like Lord of the Rings Online.

And you're insane if you actually believe that MMORPGs aren't deep or have no skill needed - MMORPGs NEED to have ALOT of depth, or the game will become stale and will lose subscribers. Infact, MMORPGs are usually the deepest games is in videogaming, and I can't understand how people would think otherwise. Skill is also terribly important, and the push for PVP in games like WoW and Warhammer Online can prove that, and skill can be more varied such as social skills in trading and knowing the economy in a server.

Also, anyone who thinks that can judge MMORPGs from crappy Free-2-Play korean MMORPGs, you're dead wrong.
