Forums - Sony - Guerrilla Games: 'We can get more out of the PS3 in future projects'

This "we can get even more out of the PS3" in its different variants is getting very old. Notice that these statements are always coming from Sony affiliated developers.

It seems like Sony is desparate to explain why the mighty PS3 is consistently producing games that are just on par with the "XBox 1.5" at best.

I think we can add "we can get even more out of the PS3" together with "Wait until is released" to the Lexicon of Wishful Thinking.

Because it's always Sony affiliated developers that make the most out the system. GoW2, Ratchet series, Gran Turismo (for the PS2, for example), etc. They always have the most appropriate tools to make the games look better, and also because they are first party, they can always "gauge" how much they are getting out of the console.

The only reason anytime one of these "potential" articles pops up, you guys come in and say something of this nature is because you really think that the 360 is really close to the PS3 and it's not. We always then see "well on paper, it's technically more powerful, but the developers won't ever get to use it". Well, they are beginning to "untap the potential"........I guess the untapping just came quicker than expected.

Killzone 2 is just the beginning. Imagine the engine it's using becoming way more refined and tweaked, like how UE3 is at like UE3.5 right now.

you obviously don't have many experinces with Sony's first party line up in PS1 and PS2 era.they always have the most advanced tools .same with PS3.

I concur with BMaker11 -- the PS3 exclusives are going to be the first apps to really showcase the PS3's potential, just like 360 exclusives showcase the 360. This has always been the case.

KZ2 looking awesome is not all PR spin. It actually is a great looking game, thanks to its exclusive nature. It utilizes some rendering performance techniques (deferred rendering, primarily) that are, for all practical purposes, unusable on the 360.

Crossplatform games aren't going to radically change their game pipeline to support deferred rendering on the PS3 and not on the 360 -- that would hike dev costs past what the developers deem worthwhile. Although, eventually, as 3rd party engines mature, its inevitable that the PS3 versions of crossplat games *will* use deferred rendering and make better use of the SPUs, and the PS3 will finally demonstrate what a great platform it is.

KZ2's main reason for existance, from Sony's perspective, is to demonstrate the power of such techniques. To raise the bar, and *force* 3rd parties to work harder on the PS3, or look bad in comparison. Thus, even if KZ2 doesn't succeed financially, it will succeed strategically, as long as it reviews very well.

Several of Sony's exclusive titles this year are "demostration"/"wow factor" products -- designed specifically to showcase the PS3 to the developers and media (and consumers).  KZ2 (rendering), MAG (scale), Infamous (physics), etc... all are probably products that could never make the transition to the 360 without some serious toning down.

Why did they announce the game in 2005 if developement didn't even start until 2007?

Well, no PS3 could have actually started until Spring of 2006 when the first dev kits were sent out.

I think that they should release another game (possible Killzone 3) for the PS3 instead of waiting for the PS4. Not only is the PS4 launch unknown right now (could be 1 year to 7 years [yea right LOL]), it would be better to strike while the Iron's hot. If Killzone 2 is a great game and is a success, some people might forget about their success if they wait for the PS4.

Killzone 2 is amazing (the most advanced console game so far or even FPS in general), the technical foundation (game engine) is now there and there's still a lot of potential for massive growth. I think we will see a Killzone 3 pushing the PS3 well further.

@ Mike B

Do you think it would be a wiser move of a Killzone 3 (PS3) or a Killzone 3 (PS4)?

I don't think so, the PS4 is still way off. There are plenty of years left to develop a Killzone 3. I think Killzone 2 will sell great for Sony, a Killzone 3 will be highly anticipated and relatively cheaper to make (as most of the tech and many re-useable assets are already there). So I think a Killzone 3 could push for a lot of profitable software sales.

For example Halo 2 sales were higher than for Halo Combat Evolved, actually due to Halo 2 the original XBox finally had a profitable quarter.

@ CGI-Quality

So I think it would be better to have Killzone 4 on the PS4, the PS4 will most likely have similar specifications such as a faster Cell processor so technology wise Killzone 4 will benefit directly from Killzone 3 advances.

Let we wait first if KZ2 will be an sales succes.
