Forums - Nintendo - Quick madden 08 wii impression

Ok, I have an Xbox 360, PS2, and a Wii (got rid of the 'cube and play those games on the Wii).  I bought Madden 08 and played it a bit today.  I haven't tried all the different modes just yet nor have I tried online.

I was hoping the tutorial would help my daughter get a grip on the game so that is where we started.

Graphics : The videos made the game look better than it really does.  It's fairly fluid and the character animations overall are pretty smooth.  The field looks nice.  Overall I'm happy with it given the overall power of the Wii.

Controls:  They are OK.  It often fails to understand my intentions as to a stiff arm or other power move, but a lot of that is me at this point.  We'll see how it progresses.

The tutorial : worthless.  It doesn't have any animations, graphical displays, or anything.  Just some short paragraphs of Jargon.  It seems this was just tacked on.  So much for hoping it would help...

Practice modes are pretty good.  They let you focus on all sorts of specific tasks like running, passing, kicking, defending, etc.  Catching the ball is pretty difficult to do consistently but I suspect I'll get better with time.

There are bugs here and there.  It has occasionally thrown the ball immediately to the primary receiver as soon as it snaps which left me scratching my head...  Bugs seem to be prominent in all versions so I suspect that EA rushed all of them to make the deadline.

Bottom line for me is that given the level of polish and lacking the tutorial I hoped it had, I should have just bought a used 07 and taught her myself...

I'd give it about a 7.5 or so out of 10.  If you have any specific questions, let me know and I'll do my best to answer them.

I'm disappointed in 08 actually. They added more stuff on the offense, so now it's a lot harder to pull off Stiff arms, and I actually perfer the orginal kicking. (I never had a problem with, you'd tap A, THEN do the kick) Can't use the cursor to pick who you need. Sometimes when I hike it also causes my QB to immedately throw, which I don't remember having that issue in 07. AI in general seems kinda sketchy.

I'll try and wrangle someone into trying party mode with me, but I'm tempted to actually trade it in for 07. 08 just doesn't feel nearly as natural and inviting as 07 did. Only reason I didn't buy 07 was because I figure it'd be worth it to
wait for 08, but it's just feels like a big step down.

I've got to reiterate the sentiments of both of these posters. Madden '08 Wii
feels like it could be so much better, but there are times when it just doesn't deliver.

I *love* most of the controls, but the catch control is awful. Additionally, I think
I've juked *once* in the 9 or 10 games I've played since having the game. Its
just not as good as it could be.

The other thing that really bothers me is that I loved the old playcalling system.
I don't like the "Pick your individual play" system - I would much rather do it the
old fashioned way, and be able to do individual on the fly substitutions (a la the circle button on the old PS2 version, so I can use Reggie Bush as a WR, or substitute him in for Deuce McAlister if I wanted him in for a specific play, but not for another).

One last little bug that drives me nuts: the blur bug when coming out of the "big-play close-up." I don't know if anyone else has experienced this... but its atrocious. It hurts to watch the game when this bug is in effect.

All in all... a 7.5 is about right. It lacks features that I want and isn't quite as useable as older versions. Why update? I could do my own roster update, in that case.

I noticed that werid blur myself once. Wonder why it looked the Camera had just rolled out of bed. =P

+1 for blur bug. I wasn't sure what was going on when it happened. Just another bug to add to the growing list of annoyances. I really, really wish I could my $50 back and just buy a used 07 madden. That way EA doesn't get a royalty for turning out garbage and the used version wouldn't net them any additional revenue. Damn EA for rushing this product.

Ditto. I thought I was just being crazy, but it's good to see I'm not the only one who feels like 08 on the Wii is a step down from 07. I'm still considering just trading it in for 07, if I can find somewhere to do that. I still need to give the party mode a fair shake, but I doubt it's going to change my mind.

 EDIT: Just spotted this.

The memo reads, "Now that Madden NFL 08 is available, the development team at EA is doing some tweaking to make sure our online experience is as smooth as possible. Since there is currently a high volume of people playing online, this is the best time for us to monitor and maximize the experience. As updates are taking place over the next 24 hours, some fans may experience an interruption in online play. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience as we make the necessary updates."

Thier first online game for the Wii, and they need to patch it days later. Doesn't really concern me though since
I don't play online and it probably won't fix anything else.

when i first played this game. it was a bit rough. i spent about 6hrs trying to get things together. but i'm EXTREMELY satisfied with the game. I never played 07 on the wii. and this is my first time.

but as for the quick pass after the snap. you need to not whip the controller down after you snap the ball. i just keep it at the level i have it after the snap. doesn't bother me much.

the blur effect? usually occurs on third downs. i thought it was apart of the game like the players being fatigued or something (and it was a lot cooler in my mind then). but doesn't bother me too much.

i don't have any problems pulling stiff arms or power moves off (on all pro anyway all madden is INSANE). and i like the balance of this one. you can't just come out and be pass or run happy.

catching to me is easy just bring the controlers to your chest. simple
kicking too. hold A bring it down and then up to your chest. perfect straight line kicks everytime.

most of my gripes in this game are from the defesnes side of the ball. ripping. coverage, etc.

but i'm still learning. played my first online game.
bengals (me) vs. rams
ended up geting 3 ints
5 sacks
final score
35 - 7
me

i'm into it. i agree with most reviewers so far game is in the 8 range

Hmmm it seems my decision to go with the 360 version was a wise one. Hopefully EA will get things in order for Madden 2009 on Wii...but I won't hold my breath.

The thing I don't get is that they only need to dev the controls for the Wii once and they will have them for the next 4-5 years worth of releases. Why don't they do the controls the right way and make the game a lot more enjoyable?

Sometimes I wonder if some of these companies understand the concept of a long term strategy, they act as if the current fiscal year is the most important fiscal year the company will ever have.

It's called planned obsolescence…  If they made it perfect now, not many would get the next version…
