I compared them because they're complete opposites in those 3 points I made. R2 barely has any recoil, KZ2 has lots. R2's animations are bad, KZ2's are great. R2 is a laser show, KZ2 isn't. They're things that killed the game for me personally - I understand that some people like those things.
Some enemies might react to the bullets on a few occasions, but it's still pretty weak. It gets really bad when you fight Titans. It gets absolutely horrible in co-op they take a standard enemy from the campaign and pump it full of steroids so you stand there unloading multiple clips on it. The Stalkers were yet another case of this. I spent a while trying to figure out how to beat that part of the level....after playing the R1 demo, I assumed you had to shoot them in the back, then I finally realized that this time around you can just shoot them anywhere with anything. When they finally show signs of damage, they repeat the same animation with the same explosion and the same sound. It was a huge turnoff for me.
I was dissapointed when I found out that was the largest battle in the campaign. It also doesn't help when your infinite-respawning allies constantly shout generic lines such as "We need heavy artillery!", "Supressing fire!"......I've lost track of how many times I've seen a situation like this.
In terms of gameplay, I think we can all agree that the game could be improved very much. Comparing it to KZ2 isn't really that harsh - R2 was released in late '08. Many parts of the game didn't satisfy today's standards. I've played very old games that outdo it in many areas. It really almost feels like a last-gen game with improved graphics.
As for Mirror's Edge, that game was interesting (only played the demo). Besides being a platformer, I think it could almost qualify as having it's own genre: First-person simulator. No other game makes you really feel like you're in control of an actual person like ME does.
