Forums - Nintendo - The flaw in the Wii which makes surpassing the PS2s sales even better.

That will be true when Wii 2 comes out.... but for Wii 1 I think it's just a minor concern

Though i'd hate my buys to disapear if my wii ever breaks.

I hope this isn't a nonchalant joking comment that starts a trend on the site. Because the Wii is not even in the same league as the PS2 (as of now). As long as people realize this, the joke is fine.

and we won't be seeing a slim wii either, which I'm there were plenty of ps2 owners that rebought it just for it being slim

Man, Nintendo really did just dodge all of the extra sales hooks, didn't they? I mean, no massive hardware failures, no crippling design flaws save in a handful of launch units, no chance of a redesign later, no new editions of the same model with removed features to make people panic and buy out all the full-featured older models, no new editions with new features to make people panic and buy out the new models in spite of having one of the older ones... And they haven't even put out multiple colors yet, either! How can anybody sustain a business with reliable, uniform hardware? Only Nintendo knows.

*turns Sarcasm Detector back on* Whew. Blown enough of those up already, no way I'm blowing this one up too...

The duct tape will wear out eventually. So GameCube sales will double, and people still have to replace their Wiis. Win/win.
So the Wii will "win" this generation, and the Gamecube will retroactively "win" last generation...

Bloody brilliant!
Yep, and by manipulating the past, Nintendo beats Sony to the punch regarding 4D gaming!
However, "time waggle" will prove to be a fad.

How many PS2 sales were from repurchases anyway?

Considering that the average ps2 user had 2 ps2's, then it's easy to get the number of owners. Just divide by two. :)

I don't think that is entirely fair ...

I personally think that we have probably seen about 25% growth in the number of console users every generation since the NES, and the explosion in the number of consoles sold in the Playstation generation was from people owning multiple consoles. Some of these consoles would be people replacing broken systems while others would be from people owning two systems from different manufacturers.

Now, if my estimate of 25% per generation is correct that would mean there was between 60 Million and 80 Million second consoles purchases ... and about 30 to 40 Million (or 25% to 33%) of PS2's were replacement systems.

That's insane.... there was a statistic (I think NPD?) which had US multi-console ownership for last generation at about 3-4%, in other words of about 60 million US consoles, there were about 58 million gamers, and about 2 million of them owned more than 1 console.

That seems a fair figure to me, because really very few people own more than 1 console. (per gen) I only know 2 people that have... one of them had a PS1 and N64, but stopped gaming after that (in truth he mainly used the PS1 for music and frogger) and another friend had both an x-box and PS2 last gen, but never had more than 1 console for the other generations.

What about the rebuys due to broken PS2s?  That NPD statistic only covers people who bought two or more different consoles.

I don't think we can assume that there won't be any hardware issues in 3 or 4 years actually.

Until the console has actually been out that long we won't know what kind of issues it has as it ages. We could still have any number of problems crop up in some units as the console ages.

With the PS2 there was certain revisions that were less reliable than others. So even if the Wiis that are out now are reliable, a couple bad batches could change that. Still, Nintendo is pretty good about replacing faulty hardware, so people won't have to fight for a replacement like they did with Sony over the DREs.
