Forums - Nintendo - Mario Tennis GC

Thanks Nordlead. Knowing Nintendo of Australia though we'll get screwed and being close to full price for them like with Resident Evil 4.

hmmm i hope they let you control your characters. if not then i'll pass

Of course they're going to let you control your characters It wouldn't be much of a port to Mario Power Tennis if they didn't.

Being able to mix controls in one match would be great; my girlfriend loves Wii Sports tennis as it allows her to just focus on swinging / shot placement rather than worrying about running back into position all the time, but I'd love to able to play this game with her and use the nunchuk control scheme for myself.

$30, so a pretty good deal if you ask me.

I actually would argue that the tennis in Wii Sports is already very deep if you spend enough time with it; you can control lobbing or net hits, force, place your shots with great accuracty, etc, all with precise motions. The lack of control of your character's movement really only helps you to focus even more on the swinging, and makes it so that my girlfriend, who has little patience for the typical convoluted tennis game controls, can compete equally (she's actually quite good at it, and has just picked up the "feel" of different swings and ball placement without having to memorize any button combinations).

I would, however, love to have an additional game with nunchuk control, tournaments, crazy power shots and all that. So $30 seems like a steal, if it in any way lives up to expectations.

I agree with you regarding the depth of Wii Sports tennis. I was very disappointed with Top Spin 3 as it introduced button presses and analog stick moves to control your swing, which really made the game more a gimmick and less of a simulation, compared to Wii Sports. However, without controlling the positioning of the player, Mario Tennis would me too much simular to Wii Sports to be worthy of the price. I am glad to hear that a nunchuck control is a possibility. I would be even happier to discover they included some sort of a championship mode and the possibility to turn off the special tricks.

IGN translated the official Japanese site and detailed the controls . The nunchuck is optional and control player movement whereas motion controls all kinds of swings: serve, top spin, slice, flat, lob, drop, and smash. Now, I can only hope there is an option to turn off the special shots.

Sweet, this game should rock. If I didn't have it on the GC I'd buy it for sure.

Sounds like exactly what I was hoping it would be; I don't care about its Gamecube origins, this is now just about at the top of my list of anticipated titles.

Anyone familiar with the Gamecube can tell me if this game allows regular tennis, i.e. without special shots or environmental hazards, as an option?

Yes it does, and it's the best way to play it. 'Special moves: Off'
