Forums - Gaming - "Dreamcast was the best console ever!!!" Shut up.

I've noticed a trend, pretty much every gamer today agrees that Dreamcast was the best console ever.  The absolute peak of gaming, every game for DC was a gem and woe is you for stupidly going for a PS2 back in the day.  Do they really believe that, or do they just want to sound interesting?

If everyone who says "dreamcast was the best!@" had actually bought one, Sega would still be making hardware.

Where did this belief start, and why?

The amount of highly rated (85+) PS2 games is greater than the entire Dreamcast library, bad games and all.  (yes, shocking as it sounds, bad games were released on Dreamcast).

Even Gamecube's library dwarfs Dreamcast, even if you only count highly rated games.

And the few highly rated Dreamcast games, like Skies of Arcadia, Shenmue and Ikaruga, were released on other platforms.

I know there are hundreds of Dreamcast fans here, so please tell me, if you could only have one console for the rest of your life, would you honestly pick Dreamcast?

PC + Wii owners unite.  Our last-gen dying platforms have access to nearly every 90+ rated game this gen.  Building a PC that visually outperforms PS360 is cheap and easy.    Oct 7th 2010 predictions (made Dec 17th '08)

I agree, Dreamcast is really overrated. It's got some gold, but at the same time, if you look at the library as a whole, it's got nothing on the PS2 or SNES (whom I believe are the best consoles ever).

I think people actually need to dust off their dreamcast and play some of the games again, because alot of the games that get named as the best of the dreamcast don't hold up quite as well as a Super Mario Bros. or Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past does.

Great console though.

"I think people actually need to dust off their dreamcast and play some of the games again"

I still play Dreamcast from time to time and I still think that Shenmue is the best game ever made... I preffer Soul Calibur to its sequels, Sonic Adventure it's the best 3d Sonic to date and only a few games are as funny as Power Stone 2 or Jet Set Radio are.  Yes, for me Dreamcast is the best console ever above Snes and PS2 (and I love Snes and PS2).

Perhaps it's because of the Sega loyalists, but I agree that the Dreamcast (while a damned fine system) is not the alpha and omega it's made out to be. That said, it had a lot of bang-to-buck, in that it had few titles, but many of them being of good quality.

Hell yeah.. I would pick the dreamcast for the rest of my life: Marvel vs Capcom 2, Street Fighter 3 third strike & Soul Calibur... will play them forever.. it's the only "old" console still hooked up after all those years.. still playing on my dreamcast often..

I'll still be playing Bass Fishing when I'm old and grey.

In fact I can't wait cos I won't have to move to go to the toilet. That'll be brilliant.

Bring it on!

The DC did kinda only last less than 2(17 months in NA) yrs on the market.. for such a short time it did have the best unrivaled game library ever, superior to whatever the ps2 or GC offered in its first 2 yrs of existence.

Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is absurd.

5 THINGS I'd like to see before i knock out:

a. a AAA 3D sonic title

b. a nintendo developed game that has a "M rating"

c. redesgined PS controller

d. SEGA back in the console business

e. M$ out of the OS business

Dreamcast is in my top 3 favorite systems. Soul Calibur, Shenmue, Powerstone 1/2, Ready to Rumble,Crazy taxi, Daytona USA,PSO, the NFL 2k series, Bomberman Online,Ikaruga,Jet Grind/Set Radio,MvC,Rez, Sonic Adventure,Toy Commander, Sega Bass Fishing and a few more. Many are games I have gone back to play a few times a year, and they have aged very well.

The Dreamcast is great. So great, that it's my Xbox Live gamertag.

What's always amazed me about the Dreamcast is how sharp the graphics were through the standard RF cable.

This never struck me until I got virtua tennis 2 on the PS2 and I was confused as to why it was so fuzzy. Then I got the RGB cable for the PS2 and it sharpened everything up.

Yet the dreamcast could do it without the need for a snazzy cable.

It really was brilliant!!!!!

It still is brilliant!!!!!
