It seems like there's two camps(not counting those that simply want to see another 2D Metroid). Those that hope the next(assuming there ever will be one) 3D Metroid remain first-person, and those that would like to see it done in third-person.
As a means of compromise, why not a second-person view point? The viewpoint will be that of another bounty hunter, a helpful Metroid, or a drone(or her Alien spawn), but the player controls Samus. The "eyes" may be completely out of control of the player, or it may be up to the player to get them to a new area through pick-ups specifically such a purpose or by using some of Samus's abilities on them, such as the grappling hook.
Combat would be the trickiest aspect though. The buddy might have to follow Samus closely to give the player a good view of everything in front of her, which would require some interesting movement on the buddy's part when turning Samus around. Another option is to have the buddy stationary somewhere which gives a good vantage point of the entire area. Though this would probably limit the areas to have combat in, raise the question of why the buddy doesn't get attacked, or inhibit players that intend to avoid combat when possible and simply move from room to room quickly.
At first I thought of this merely as a joke, but if done right it would really allow for the best of both worlds. Much stronger platforming elements thanks to the third-person view. Maintain the ability to take in the visuals of the environments as well as use of visors with the buddy. I'm sure it would never happen in the Metroid universe, but I think it's interesting nonetheless.
