Forums - Sony - What will be the specs of the PS4? Your Predictions

To the people that think there will be no PS4....well you must be crazy. Obviously there will be a PS4 but instead of being a PS4 it'll be a PS3.5, which is fine by me. It'll be simple, cheap and powerful (well not that powerful but maybe 4 times more powerful then the PS3). Will sell for $349.99, will contain blu-ray, and the Cell chip will be upgraded slightly it's already powerful enough to be considered next generation so Cell1.5, they don't have to do much to it. And god knows what they will do with the graphics card, I don't have a clue, they might go big or they might not.

It'll contain a big hardrive maybe 500 GB, and pretty much the same features as the PS3 and will be released in 2012.

They can't afford to go big like they did the PS3, so they'll probably try to make another PS1 or PS2, make a cheap console that plays great games.

Crazy? All you have to say is that we are "obviously" wrong.

We have good reason to think there may not be one. Sony is in a poor financial position, and another big project would not be a good business decision in their situation.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

Well crazy is pretty close, if someone thinks there will not be no PS4, just because Sony f-ed up once, doesn't mean there going to jump out of the Video game market. You do remeber how successful and how badly the PS1 and PS2 dominated the market, just because they F up once, after dominating the market for a almost 15 years doesn't mean they'll drop out.

Sony will be fine, there only two years in this generation and they say the PS3 should finally start making money this year, almost every console loses money the first couple years there out, that's why Sony has the 10 year plan ;)

PS4 will be an upgrade, whatever they needed to make the console function in HDTVs is already done, the Blu-Ray promotion is done also, so this one will not need huge steps...

So i'm thinking:

-CPU: Cell upgrade, with full hardware BC from the start, something with 2-4 PPEs and 16 available SPEs, running at 4.0 GHz... Just like Ninty did with upgrading the Gekko (Hollywood is a Gekko upgrade)...

-RAM: 4 GB-8GB (whatever is good for 2011-12-13)

-GPU: Nvidia again, more powerful and RSX compatible from the start...

-HDD: starting with 320 GB...

-Disc Drive: PS1 had CD, PS2 DVD, PS3 BR, and guess what? PS4 will be BR also... What changed???
1. PS3 was built around promoting BR, it was not an accepted tech like CD and DVD were when the previous consoles launched.
2. BR can do a lot more data than what's needed next gen, even for RPGs. 25 GB single, 50 GB dual, 100 GB Quad, and so on...
3. This economy won't handle another format so fast...

-Full BC with PS1/2/3 games (1 and 2 with software emu) with a hardware upscaler included for PS1/2 games and PS3/4 games that are 720p...

-Upgrades on software, card readers, 6 to 8 USB ports, wireless, dualshock 4 (rumble+better sixaxis), and a full motion control for the "PS for everyone" brand...

Sony can ill afford to spend lots of money developing a PS4, due to its current financial position. Development costs are not included in the financial statements. The PS3 development costs were costly to Sony. A PS4 if it even does happen will have to wait for at least 4 or 5 years before it is launched.

The specifications of the PS4 is any one's guess and noone can accurately see 5 years into the future.

Well, the PS4 won't cost much to develop if they make the processor slightly more powerful, improve the Blu-ray drive, increase the HDD size, and add more RAM, will it?

There will be a PS4.

If theres going to be PS4, it will be mainly for casual gaming with some kind of waggle or similar controller and of course with low end (PC) components. Using CELL in PS4 would be bad choice.

(PS3 will crush WII and X360! PS3 will crush X360! There will be PS4! See the pattern. ;) )

It will be black.

i second that

2008 year end sales (made in January 2008):

44.2 M 27.1 M 20.8 M

- 4 GHz Cell with 1 PPE 8 SPEs as originally planned
- 4096 MB XDR2 RAM at 8 GHz
- RSX2 based over mid-range Geforce 4xx-5xx
- Blu-ray drive 8-12x speed
- Sony-mote
- 4 USB ports, 1 gigabit ethernet port, flash card reader, wi-fi

Some improvements over the PS3 base, most of them developed by 3rd party makers, so low developing costs. Perhaps release price of ~$399 sold at profit like the GC.
It will launch at the same time as the X720. Or do you think Sony is on gaming business to lose money? They won't release a console at loss and after its competition knowing now no brand is untouchable.
Perhaps they'll even try to release it before MS or Ninty, at end of 2010 or the like.
