Forums - Sony - Sony on the brink of corporate upheaval, drastic changes

http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/multimedia/display/20081223130548_Sony_PlayStation_3_Still_Loses_Money_for_the_Company.html

*2 years on since PS3 has launched PS3 still being sold for a $50 loss per console. PS3 costs around $449 to produce and sold for $399.

I stand corrected and accept the PS3 losses are only around $3 billion which has erased all the gains made on PS2 during PS2's 5 year peak selling period.

PS3 is Sony's 8 to 10 billion loss burden. Sony has fallen since PS3 was launched.
Sony fans go on about XBox and XBox 360 costing MS $5 billion dollars. PS3 cost Sony double that amount. Blu-Ray has been a high risk investment from Sony. All the eggs have been put into one basket.
Sony is struggling to stay alive in the video gaming industry. Sony has to remember it has limited financial resources. MS on the other hand have virtually unlimited financial resources. Going head to head, blow for blow, price cut after price cut with MS could be the downfall of Sony.

Your trolling is getting VERY tiring.  Now you're just making up numbers!  Sony never lost anywhere close to 8-10 billion on the ps3.  They only lost a bit more than 3 billion.

Not that I disagree with your original point -- numonex's claim was absurd and I considered banning him myself -- but the totals you've listed don't include last quarter. In total in 2009, Sony has lost ~350 million dollars, bringing the total losses during the PS3 era to ~3.5 billion.

I also considered not even posting this correction because I didn't want to give numonex any ammunition. Your guess was way off base, Numonex: makingmusic was correct, he just hadn't included the most recent financial data.

The numbers are correct (as far as I've seen), it's just that the year is off by 1 in Sony's case for comparison reasons (the fiscal years are counted differently between the companies). So when you see Q1 09 it's Q1 08.

There's some data missing there for the last quarter, when Sony lost about $400m in the gaming division. Of course the PS3 loss is bigger than that table shows, since it includes PS2 and PSP profits. Still, the PS3 loss is not $8-10 billion.

I was wondering about that too. How did they get those numbers.

looking over these again brings me to another question, where did they hide cell development, unless the ps2 was far more profitable then we are lead to believe cell development spending which was about 3 bill should start showing up around FY2003

*also MS needs to sperate out its units so we know what they are losing money on I mean windows mobile is in there as is windows embed, windows auto, windows mac, media room (internet protocals and shit), zune (a gigantic sinkhole for money) all pc games revenue (that makes some sence) mice and that jazz, and consumer R&D think surfaces which is another money pit

Remember though that the PSP was not profitable when Sony first launched it, the PSP might be help offset the PS3 loss now but back when the PS3 launched the PSP was not much help at all and made worse by crappy software sales.

All Sony need to do to fix gaming is simple, when launching a new console/handheld ensure that it's profitable from day 1.

All you people talking about how much money Sony has need to shut the fuck up since you know dick. There will be closure and my guess is that the Ericcson division will be first.
