Yeah I can't really respond to that first paragraph for obvious reasons. The casuals were always there, it's jsut that after the gaming crash, the NES showed up and completely dominated the industry by itself, becoming a staple of popular culture for more than a decade and marginalizing PC gamers in a way that the Atari never did.
I refuse to believe that people are stupid enough that it's just fanboyism talking. I refuse. People are not that stupid. It's the idea that there won't be as much money for a game like Gears of War or Metal Gear that really frightens people, and it would take the Apocalypse of all Asinine Morons to convince me that it's about something as puerile as console allegiance.
As to what the Wii changed? Well, that's another argument altogether.

Bolded part really appeals to me. I am a firm believer that people are not stupid. I joke about it, sure, but I don't think of people in general as irrational, deluded or stupid. It's just not a sane thing to believe. Since this is a rare view on this forum, I must confess I am happy to see that I am not alone in thinking this.
My gaming tastes are very wide, and I have enjoyed gaming for many years, on several systems. Lately, I have been getting very jaded, and I must say that games are losing their appeal. I am no longer fanatic about gaming. Reading and having opinions about it is still a huge interest though, most likely because it's an area where I really am knowledgeble (at least compared to people around me).
I am saying this so you'll understand where I'm coming from here. The HD machines do very little to get me interested in games again, it's mostly the same thing as the last generations. The Wii tries to break away from that, and the success it's having peaks my interest.
So when I read all the negative press about the Wii, it does get me down a bit. The worst thing is that most people tend to think that people are stupid. It's really not true, I believe. And it really goes against all the assumptions in the economic theory I just read in university. The assumptions usually made in internet circles however, goes something like this:
Wii games have low metacritic rating and sell millions - People must be stupid.
Wii does not do HD, and yet it sells - People must be stupid.
Awesome hardcore games don't sell on the Wii - People must be stupid.
I don't like the Wii, and it still sells - People must be stupid.
It's the typical hardcore mentality, I think. Anyone who's hardcore enough about anything easilly assumes that people that have no interest in that field, or simply different interests in that field, are stupid. I think it's shortsighted and problematic. If you are that blind to your fellow men you will never understand why things change or why certain things are more in style than others.
I would like to say this: People are not stupid. They are rational, experienced and know what they want. Now, this is not always true, but if you assume this in economics, you are at least on the right track. If you just assume that they are uneducated and stupid, you'll be in for a world of hurt.
So if people are not stupid, what are the reasons that the Wii is doing so well? Because they think it appears to be fun. (if you can find a better reason, please let me know) And why do the PS360 crowd dislike it so much? Khuutra is right on the money I think.
Sorry, I went on a bit of a rant. I'm just really glad that you said people are not stupid. :)
