Forums - Nintendo - Why NOW Is The Time To Abandon Ship On The Wii

Well the fact is that as Montana says the PS3 and 360 are loved much more that the Saturn,Cube or Xbox ever were.Maybe the DC and N64 were loved in equal amount ...and that explains the amount of hathred of the nintendo and sega fans back then against Sony wishing that anyone took down Sony (even MS no less) now that their faves couldnt.

But I think theres something more to this Wii hate .

First ,its the console with the worst games by a long shot.Period.Theres really no discussing this .

Second ,it sells the most by a long shot and may put some bad ideas on developers heads about changing the industry to a casual flavoured one.

The fact that it sells the most united to the crap games create hate between core and hardcore gamers. Its totally normal .

Finally ,the Wii marketing is geared towards that blue ocean of casual players ...core and hardcore gamers dont see them represented in those ads.Just to give an example the DS and some Wii games are promoted here in Spain in some spots by a 75 years old actress called Amparo Baro. This drives nuts the oldsters and may gain lots of sales ,but generates feelings of disdain among core and hardcore users.

Don't forget about Microsoft who's been known to use viral marketing agencies to spread unfavorable opinions on message boards about their competitors.

Which could help explain why Nintendo's DS doesn't experience the same. (since Microsoft doesn't have a handheld)

For once I actually think this was a well written article. There was no present or preexisting bias in it and was actually stated respectfully.

Although I think he's ignorant, which is pretty obvious, but he simply says Wii isn't for him. Now he jumps to far with his assumptions that its not for any "hardcore" gamers as he puts it but I must say this is one of the better written "jump ship from Wii" or "wii is casual only" type thing. He successfully points out that the problem with Wii is in him not in anyone else. But I do think he's being a little silly with the assumptions that there are no hardcore games for Wii in 2009 that anyone will like.

2009 is actually filled with your traditional games hardcore gamers will like so I think many would be happy. I disagree if you think now is the best time to jump ship because the ship is about to land. No use drowning a few miles away from shore.

The thing that is particularly maddening is this call from these hardcore Nintendo converts to the Wii owners to abandon ship. I get that sort of thing all the time at joystiq. People say "sell your Wii and it's so-called 'games'" "You're in denial, just get a 360," etc, etc. I find it interesting in his story that he was all into Nintendo types of games, then all of a sudden his passion is the stereotypical grey-brown realistic shooter of some sort. If you like Nintendo-type games, you're not going to be satisfied by the best stuff on Sony or Microsoft platforms.

I'm fine with others having their own opinion, but this attitude of trying to "save Wii owners from themselves" is the height of arrogance, and is truly despicable

Oh, and the hardcore gamers of the NES era were on their gaming computers. The casual gamer market that existed before the NES (the one that got the 2600 to sell 30 million units), had been almost completely destroyed by the crash of '83, because there came to be a complete lack of faith in video game systems. Nintendo restored that faith.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Hi, I'm Ryan Rigney, the writer of this article. Screw you, Bobbuffalo. You didn't even read the article. At no point in that article did I whine about Nintendo abandoning the "hardcore." I congratulated Nintendo on successfully broadening their market. I didn't complain about it. I just said that I realized that the Wii is no longer for me, and I'm better off selling it and using the money for something that I'll actually use.

There, I shortened it for your tiny brain. Enjoy.

Hey, good on you. I bet you got  decent mark-up for it.

Hell, that's like five 360 games. Not a bad deal.

Yea I actualy thought it was well written devoid of most biases.  I mean you make too many assumptions regarding other players but it seems congenial which is a lot more than most hate editorials about something.

Well well well.... This is unexpected. Haven't seen this happen before. There's only two possibilities here:

1) Stupid troll who just decided to make that account for the sake of arguing on a losing side.

2) The real RR which would be even worse considering you open your retort with "Screw You," hich is absolutely sad of someone who calls themselves an editor of any sort, even if it is just your own blog. Pathetic. Not to mention the whole "tiny brain" insult at the end.

Yeah I can't really respond to that first paragraph for obvious reasons. The casuals were always there, it's jsut that after the gaming crash, the NES showed up and completely dominated the industry by itself, becoming a staple of popular culture for more than a decade and marginalizing PC gamers in a way that the Atari never did.

I refuse to believe that people are stupid enough that it's just fanboyism talking. I refuse. People are not that stupid. It's the idea that there won't be as much money for a game like Gears of War or Metal Gear that really frightens people, and it would take the Apocalypse of all Asinine Morons to convince me that it's about something as puerile as console allegiance.

As to what the Wii changed? Well, that's another argument altogether.

Bolded part really appeals to me. I am a firm believer that people are not stupid. I joke about it, sure, but I don't think of people in general as irrational, deluded or stupid. It's just not a sane thing to believe. Since this is a rare view on this forum, I must confess I am happy to see that I am not alone in thinking this.

My gaming tastes are very wide, and I have enjoyed gaming for many years, on several systems. Lately, I have been getting very jaded, and I must say that games are losing their appeal. I am no longer fanatic about gaming. Reading and having opinions about it is still a huge interest though, most likely because it's an area where I really am knowledgeble (at least compared to people around me).

I am saying this so you'll understand where I'm coming from here. The HD machines do very little to get me interested in games again, it's mostly the same thing as the last generations. The Wii tries to break away from that, and the success it's having peaks my interest.

So when I read all the negative press about the Wii, it does get me down a bit. The worst thing is that most people tend to think that people are stupid. It's really not true, I believe. And it really goes against all the assumptions in the economic theory I just read in university. The assumptions usually made in internet circles however, goes something like this:

Wii games have low metacritic rating and sell millions - People must be stupid.
Wii does not do HD, and yet it sells - People must be stupid.
Awesome hardcore games don't sell on the Wii - People must be stupid.
I don't like the Wii, and it still sells - People must be stupid.

It's the typical hardcore mentality, I think. Anyone who's hardcore enough about anything easilly assumes that people that have no interest in that field, or simply different interests in that field, are stupid. I think it's shortsighted and problematic. If you are that blind to your fellow men you will never understand why things change or why certain things are more in style than others.

I would like to say this: People are not stupid. They are rational, experienced and know what they want. Now, this is not always true, but if you assume this in economics, you are at least on the right track. If you just assume that they are uneducated and stupid, you'll be in for a world of hurt.

So if people are not stupid, what are the reasons that the Wii is doing so well? Because they think it appears to be fun. (if you can find a better reason, please let me know) And why do the PS360 crowd dislike it so much? Khuutra is right on the money I think.

Sorry, I went on a bit of a rant. I'm just really glad that you said people are not stupid. :)

This is invisible text!

We are in general agreement, muchacho. On a lot of things, apparently.

I completely disagree with you on this part mainly because I have absolutely ZERO interest for any 360 and PS3 game because they aren't fun imo. I have played Bioshock (couldn't get into the game cuz of the aiming controls) and Played Halo 3 (Boring, or too slow for me cuz I'm an Unreal or Quake guy) and Resistance... well resistance is bad mainly because of the PS3 controller...

I love all my Wii games thus far. I think it's because they don't look the same as "HD" games. These HD games seem to be focusing mostly on the looks of the game... I'd rather have a blast with MK wii, or Brawl than play an HD game right now because those HD games feel the same as I've played since I was 12... or less ;/
