Nintendo needs to make another great 2D Mario platformer for the Wii.

Nintendo still doomed?

Well, that's what Wario World: Shake it was.  And that's what Super Paper Mario was.

The thing is, it would still take a lot of resources and time to create something like Super Mario Brothers 3 now.  So why not give it some improvements?  What's what the New Super Mario Brothers is all about.  And it is fantastic.

I played a little of New Super Mario Bros. and I don't know quite what it was but it just didn't do it for me. I don't think the levels are as challenging and they are more about memorisation than skill.

All the Mario 2D platformers have always been about memorization, as the enemys do the same thing every time. I can beat the original with my eyes closed in 1 life (ok, so maybe not with my eyes closed) and Mario 3 is the same way (although, it takes me more than 1 life).

It is sad, but 2D side scrolling platformers of old that were hard because you died in 1 hit are no longer popular. If they were popular developers would still make them. I've been wanting a new Super Mario Bros. (2D) for a long time, and New Super Mario Bros is the best we've gotten so far (and it was a very good game too).

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

I miss when u couldn't save your game

yeah its gotten a little crazy lately with the save points...walk 5 feet..checkpoint....walk another 30 feet....checkpoint.....another 30 feet...another checkpoint. you can die a million times just as long as you eventually reach that check point

Well Super Mario Galaxy is my favorite Mario game...

...then again, my second favorite is Super Mario World. Keep in mind that both of these games are in my top 10 games of all time.

So I suppose that I have an appreciation for both types, and would love to see another 2D Mario game. New Super Mario Bros. was a fantastic game, so you'd hear no complaints from me if we saw another 2D title on either DS or Wii.

I wouldn't mind another 2D Mario.

Of course, I'd love to see 2D and 3D platformers co-exist happily with developers making lots of both.

@nordlead

I don't think they were about memorisation. To me they were mainly about how long and how far in the game you could make it without dying.
