When I play Super Mario Sunshine or New Super Mario Bros it's very apparent that Mario isn't the same guy he was when I first played him.
- He didn't talk --OK. he did but only in short random moments not every time he jumped, punched or kicked (Super Mario World was my first mario game).--
- He didn't have to find items in order to move the game along.
- When he was hit he got smaller unless he was already small in which case he would die.
- His abilities weren't on a timer - His abilities with the exception of the starman power-up lasted until you got hit or died. -- Ok there was also the Power Balloon and all of Yoshi's extra abilities but I don't care.
- He didn't spend most of his time on puzzles - He always was on the move because of enemy's. He never got stuck in a area because he was confused about what to do. It was beat the level or die (in the game, unless you're really sore about it).
To be honest Super Mario World/Super Mario Bros. 4 isn't my favorite of the 2D mario games it's Super Mario Bros. 3 (Super Mario All-Stars had it). Even though I played SMW first I thought SMB3 had more creative levels and items and enemys.
Some people who's first mario game was Super Mario 64 might say "Ah, you're just suffering nostalgia." I think a great way to relate to what I'm saying is to imagine instead of making another 3D platformer Nintendo made a Mini Game Collection, a FPS or a RPG and said it was the sequel to Super Mario Galaxy and from then on they'd never make another 3D platformer.
