When I play Super Mario Sunshine or New Super Mario Bros it's very apparent that Mario isn't the same guy he was when I first played him.
- He didn't talk --OK. he did but only in short random moments not every time he jumped, punched or kicked (Super Mario World was my first mario game).-Except for in the Super Mario Bros. Super Show where he talked all of the time?
- He didn't have to find items in order to move the game along. -Except for when he had to find keys in Super Mario 2 or warp whistles/hammers/keys in Super Mario Bros. 3?
When he was hit he got smaller unless he was already small in which case he would die. -Except for in Super Mario Bros. 2 where he had hit points, Super Mario RPG, or Yoshi's Island?
- His abilities weren't on a timer - His abilities with the exception of the starman power-up lasted until you got hit or died. -- Ok there was also the Power Balloon and all of Yoshi's extra abilities but I don't care. -There was Kuribo's shoe which only lasted until you finished the level. Even if you didn't get hit or die, you still lost it (yes, I know this was weak, but you already named the Starman. What else could I say?)
- He didn't spend most of his time on puzzles - He always was on the move because of enemy's. He never got stuck in a area because he was confused about what to do. It was beat the level or die (in the game, unless you're really sore about it). -Unless you count Bowser's castle wich was sometimes just one big puzzle, forcing you to find the right route while racing a timer.
To be honest Super Mario World/Super Mario Bros. 4 isn't my favorite of the 2D mario games it's Super Mario Bros. 3 (Super Mario All-Stars had it). Even though I played SMW first I thought SMB3 had more creative levels and items and enemys.
Some people who's first mario game was Super Mario 64 might say "Ah, you're just suffering nostalgia." I think a great way to relate to what I'm saying is to imagine instead of making another 3D platformer Nintendo made a Mini Game Collection, a FPS or a RPG and said it was the sequel to Super Mario Galaxy and from then on they'd never make another 3D platformer.

I'm just arguing for argument's sake. I played Super Mario Bros. 1 to close out 2008 for pete's sake. Anyhoo, get your hands on New Super Mario Bros. for the DS and have a blast! 2D Mario rocks!!
