Forums - Sony - I finally understand Sonys 10 year plan!

I doubt Nintendo knows their business that well.  The gamecube was a piece of crap compared to the rest, and im sure even nintendo is surprised at how well the wii is doing.  I'm continually amazed at the people I hear buy a wii.  Considering the people who I hear buy it, I have to wonder if it's a fad.  The wii seems like the new tickle me elmo.  I'm really interested at seeing the results of the next wave of consoles.  I personally don't think nintendo will do nearly as well (not that they'll do poorly) as they did this generation.  But, maybe i'm completely wrong.  Who knows.

The main reason I wonder if it's a fad, is that a lot of people are really disappointed in the wii.  They pull it out at a party every once in a while, and shortly after they buy it it no longer gets any use.  They think they're going to get a much cooler piece of machinery than they get.  As soon as the initial wow factor wears off they fall back into their normal, nongamer, lifestyle.  It's these kinds of people that caused the wii sales to skyrocket like they did.  Nintendo pulled the nongamer into gaming for a little while.  I just personally don't see them keeping most of these people there.  But, like I said, who knows.  We'll have to wait and see.

And yes, sony fanboys are having a hard time accepting that they lost this generation.  Go visit blu-ray.com.  It's almost funny how fanatical they are there.

I'm sorry, but I have had it up to my eyeballs with people who make these sweeping statements without a shred of evidence or statistic to back up their claims and turn a truly Nelsonian blind eye to some very easily seen and well known evidence to the contrary . So that you won't continue to make a fool of yourself in a serious sales forum I'll point you to some things worth glancing at

I'm going to let you unsubstantiated claim that the Game cube was a piece of crap slide. You're wrong and pretty much everyone here knows it but you have bigger problems to deal with.

Your premise that non-gamers are lured in and then drop back out, that the Wii is a fad is so out of date it has become a joke. This is after all the third Christmas, and while some people just never seem to get the word, it probably would be getting out by now. So let’s go look at the sales charts for the last two years. If it's just a fad we should see a lot of flattening in the curve

Well no sign of anything but acceleration after two years. Fad Theory  - FAIL

Next, you claim they use it a few times and forget about it. Well once again we are a serious sales site so we also track software. If people are playing a few rounds of Wii Sports and then putting it away then that would be reflected in very poor software sales and attachment rate.

No the rate is pretty consistent with the PS3 and not out of line with the X360 considering its extra year. 236,000, 000 pieces of software is a little silly to imagine if the consoles are being played. NOT USED – FAIL.

Then you claim, without giving any evidence to support it that there is massive disappointment. It that were true, especially in these tough economic times then we would expect a vast and busy trade in used units as people try to unload them. Let’s go over to EBay and look for signs of this massive disaffection.

This is as of this evening and frankly I am amazed that in the entire world of EBay there is the huge total of 269 used Wiis for sale.  Plenty of new ones and amazingly they are still going for over list, right after Christmas but no sign of any significant number of people bailing. FAIL

Wait though, isn’t it possible that rather than Ebay they may be trading them in at GameStop since what the want presumably is some better machine.

Nope GameStop doesn’t have a single  used or refurbished Wii. They don’t even have any new one’s either. They do have a good supply of traded in Xbox 360s and PS3, could that mean that people are not universally happy with these superior machines. That can’t be, can it? FAIL FAIL FAIL

In any case I have shown where there does not seem to be one shred of evidence for your claims which means you have essentially wasted everyone’s time and added nothing useful to the discussion. Next time you want to come in swinging with sweeping statements, do a little homework first. Otherwise you really are no  better than a troll.

Well, the Wii sure sells a lot of consoles. No one really knows why. It has had very little to with the quality of its software so far because looking at the places that are supposed to be the best judges of such things, the Wii's software library aside from four or five games hasn't been that impressive and it certainly hasn't been any more impressive than either the PS3 or 360's library in any way. It doesn't have to do with price either because the Wii isn't the most inexpensive console on the market and it does sell well at an even higher price on ebay.

I don't know why casual games sell as well as they do. It strikes me if people wanted to bowl or play ping pong, then they would go to a bowling alley or find a real ball and ping pong table.

Hopefully something will come along to change the situation or when for some reason the situation changes to where the consoles and games that actually deserve to do well will do well, but if that doesn't happen, then it doesn't happen. Not much can be done about it. Heck, maybe one of these days Nintendo will come out with a quality console and / or quality games like they had in the SNES era, so it might not even be that much of a big deal.

If you look at video game consoles as video game machines in the video game business, then I see why you don't understand why the Wii is selling so well.  Nintendo sees itself as an entertainment company.  They are making video game consoles to entertain people through videogames.

Video games primary function is to entertain.  It is not to make art, to simulate reality, or to advance technology.  Now games can still be artistic, realistic or technologically advanced but it has to be ENTERTAINING in order to succeed.  Casual games sell the way they do because people are entertained by it.  If you can get the same entertainment value from Wii bowling compared to real bowling, why will you have to go to a bowling alley.

As to the best judges of games, I would suggest that sales are actually the best judges of games AS ENTERTAINMENT.  Videogame sites may judge games based on graphics, sound, controls, story, etc. but that is not what is important with most people.  What is important will be "Did I have fun playing this game?" and "Was I entertained by this game?"

I hope with this, you will understand why the Wii is selling so well.  If you're willing to learn more about the videogame industry and not just a fanboy spouting talking points, I suggest reading some of Sean Malstrom's articles (google it).

so what do you say aboute the end of the world??? your gess is too crazy

This thread should have been titled "I figured out why Sony is going for a ten year plan with the PS3" and the OP should have ended with "It makes perfect sense". I hate to see so much potential being wasted.

By adding those slight changes, it would have been a much better thread.  It wouldn't have been as good as the Resident Evel thread, but hey.

@BTFeather: You mean you don't want to know. You just stated it in your post that software is the sales driving force behind the Wii, despite trying to get your words back in the next sentence, by stating your opinion on the relative quality of Wiis library.
Wii is selling because of its superior games library, Wii Sports, Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii being the main sales driving factors, whether you like it or not.
The thing is, that the audience PS360 is tapping, is the audience that has always been the minority of the market. Basically the audience that PS360 tries to expand to, is PC "hardcore" audience, which propably goes back to their PC:s after there's noticeably difference in graphical quality in favor of PC once again.

@bdbd The only thing is Wii Sports, Wii Fit, and Mario Kart Wii aren't superior games to what is available on the 360 and PS3.  Otherwise they would have much higher scores than they do at Game Rankings.

@DrJay, These games might provide better entertainment for some people.  But, I don't think you get the same social interaction playing Wii Bowling at home that you get in playing at a Bowling Alley.  Also, you don't get the same satisfaction as knowing you're strong enough to pick up a real bowling ball and and in knocking down real pins.

I looked at the Malstom articles.  I hope he is right that the Wii is following the DS trajectory because that would mean less Wii Sports and Wii Play games in the future for the Wii and more real games like a 3d remake of Final Fantasy VI with graphics better than the PS2 FF games.

Wii Sports, Wii Fit & Mario Kart ARE superior to MORE people than what is available on the 360 and PS3. Gamerankings is just a collective of hardcore game reviewers who just don't get it. People power determines what is popular, not critics.

As for your bowling analogy... don't you think you'd get more satisfaction buying a gun and going on a shooting rampage than playing GTA4? Shouldn't you try to play in a local league of soccer than buy FIFA or PES? How about the satisfaction of driving your car down the highway at over 100mph rather than Forza or Gran Tourismo?

You can't be serious, but I'm sure you are.

Graphics don't matter that much.

In term of sales, I agree. Also, judging by the Wii's success, gameplay doesn't matter either.

Trolling.

Go play Super Mario Galaxy or Super Smash Bros. Brawl or No More Heroes or Zelda: Twilight Princess or Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. Need I go on?
