In terms of the quality of games released on their platforms, probably.
In terms of sales and market growth. No.

To be fair, GT5 may just squeak out in 2009 around Christmas. As for GoW3, yeah it will be at least 2010 unless they rush it out and risk ruining the final game of the trilogy.
| Gearbox said: So, I've been thinking and realized "OMG wow sony has a strong chance" reasons 1. Many devs are either increasing support or returning to the psp. 2. At some point they will be selling the ps3 for a profit, say hello to advertisments then. 3. HUGE linup. Uncharted 2, god of war 3, gran turismo 5, killzone 2, infamous, white knight chronicles, ratchet and clank future series, the list goes on. 4. Nintendo doesn't have any big releases that we know of. Microsoft has some 5. Ready at dawn studios might just make their own ip for the psp rather then using other titles. Everything they have made is/was genious what do u think? |
(1) More devs are abandoning the PSP, including some of the most successful ones. Like God of War for PSP? Dev left the PSP.
(2) After this most recent cost reduction, they're about $100 away from selling the PS3 for a profit. Cost reduction will get harder from this point forward, of course, and it is unlikely they will get to a profit on a per-system-sold basis in 2009.
(3) Your "huge" lineup consists of games that may or may not come out in 2009 (GoW 3, GT 5), games that haven't exactly received critical acclaim (White Knight Chronicals), and another Uncharted and another Ratchet & Clank. Those games didn't change the PS3's fortunes, so why would their sequels?
(4) Nintendo always hides their big releases.
(5) Ready at Dawn doesn't work with the PSP anymore. They jokingly stated that maybe they should reconsider it, but they were kidding. They literally said that they should reconsider it because they were good at it. But they're moving to more profitable platforms (like the DS).

On Topic:
No... it will not be Sony's "year"... If 2007,and 2008 weren't its year, even with a lackluster lineup by Nintendo in 2008, a great line up from Sony in 07 and 08, and RRoD problems throughout both 07 and 08... then will it ever be Sony's year? By the time the price reaches the high selling point.... Nintendo and Microsoft will probably already be announcing there next consoles... Which will pretty much make anyone decline the PS3, in favor of the next generation consoles soon to be released...
In other words:
Nintendo:
2008: Lackluster First and Third Party game Lineup... Over use of perfials...
2009: -New and old ips making a comeback... (New mario? New Zelda? Pikmin 3, Punchout) DdoC and FF4 in America... Gamecube Remakes; Third parties stepping up... The Conduit, Madworld, Monster Hunter 3, Dragon Quest, etc. (This list actually goes on)
Microsoft:
2008: RRoD... Oldest system out... feeling stale...
2009: -Price drop already in effect... NXE already released to reinvigorate the experience... RRoD officially gone... Solid line up... (Halo:Wars and Halo:ODST; Each is set to sell at least a million on day one...)
Sony:
2008: Great Game Lineup... Huge price (Huge Factor)
2009: Solid Game Lineup (Not as good as last years...) ... Still Huge Price (No Pricedrop in sight, Sony still not profiting...)

Even after they said they'd never make a PSP(1) game again? |
Yeah, they seem to be reneging on that.
If you have a PS3, it looks like it's going to be a big year. Good games on the horizon. Sales wise, they might even do better than 2008, but likely to be 3rd place again. But who knows? This gen has been pretty weird. The Wii selling out with no releases for the 2nd half of the year was pretty incredible.

Qual é, Dadinho...?

Nope. They sent all of their PSP development kits back to Sony. They're moving to more profitable platforms.
In terms of games, they have '09 in the bag. But for sales, profit, marketshare etc, Ninty will wipe the floor with them again.

It will be sony's year as it was 2007 and 2008 ;)

Every time a PS3 exclusive nears release (and they're getting scarce) the fanboys go rabid and proclaim it to be THE title that'll turn the tide for the console. Then, it doesn't happen. *Yawn* |
Exactly what I'm thinking. I'm so tired of these threads!
Sony have the same 10 yr strategy as Nintendo did. Be number 1 for 10 yrs and then not be number 1 for 10 yrs

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.
