Forums - Gaming - Does anyone think Sony will pull the plug on the PS3 or PSP?

They won't pull the plug on them but there is a chance they won't live out their "predicted" timeframes.

The PlayStation brand is not in any trouble. If it were, then the PSP sales would have plummeted a long time ago. As a matter of fact, the PSP is the only current-gen console that isn't made by Nintendo that's had strong sales throughout all regions.

The only place Sony really messed up with the PS3 is the price. Had it been priced at $299-$399, then the loss of exclusives and delayed European launch would not have mattered very much. Even then, it still not clear whether or not it's a fatal mistake as the PS3 is still outselling the 360 in Japan in Europe, the PS3 still hasn't had a Christmas in Europe, and heavy-hitters are still coming(GTAIV, MGS4, Gran Turismo 5, FF13).

Even if the worst-case scenario were to happen, Sony could easily redeem themselves with the PS4 by making it cheaper and selling the hardware at a profit from the beginning. The PSP2 can be even better if it's sold at a profit to begin with and at a lower price and with some hardware modifications such as a second analog stick.

Consoles owned: Saturn, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, PSP, DS, PS3

Would not completing the ten year lifecycle be pulling the plug ??? Because I don´t se the PS3 living longer than the PS2... when MS and Nintendo bring out a new machine Sony will follow in one years time or they will have an even steeper uphill battle than this generation.

what MS failure ???? i'm not being a fanboy... but 20+ million in what??? 4 years it's not really a failure for a market that jammed when it's your first entry on it...

the RRoD could be the failure... but we'll see that on the long run....

about Sony making money... you realize... that if a RRoD like pb would happen to Sony it could almost put them in the street... they can't afford much more loss...

I don't see Sony pulling the plug.... because I see Sony starting to sell a bit better... but certainly not because they have a solid financial back....

"I don't see Sony pulling the plug.... because I see Sony starting to sell a bit better... but certainly not because they have a solid financial back".

Now thats the only thing I care about, and I agree with you on the statement that I quoted from you above.

The massive Japan flop and Euro failure, thats what.  Also they lost money that whole gen.

See Sony would not design such awful hardware then rush it to market, so theres no if. With the way their other division are doing yahh they can.

I think Bodhestava nailed it on the head. Sony needs to reevaluate how they design their consoles and change their philosophy accordingly. I'm sure the PS4 will follow an entirely different business model than the PS3 (and to an extent, PS2).

With that said, I sure hope the PSP doesn't die. I just picked up one this weekend and it's one hell of a machine. Too bad that Sony decided to make it into a movie-watching machine with UMD and all that crap. Make it play games and play them well, Sony. What games the PSP does have are great. It's too bad that no one buys them.

OVER 20 million is no one? The PSP is great but to most people they do not want to take long involved console style games portable. They would rather have quick quirky games on the go. That seems to be the difference in choosing a DS over a PSP. Oddly enough it seems this Quick Quirkyness seems to appeal to most people and now Nintendo is taking this philosophy to console gaming as well. Not too challanging gameplay that casual players can still have fun with.

This console was brought to you by the company that decided secretly hacking your computer through CDs was "A-OK", don't just assume that the PS3 is without faults.  Granted, until or unless it DOES have a major problem, then we can say it's clean.  Just don't go saying "OF COURSE it's clean, Sony wouldn't do something so naïve as place an imperfection in their system!"

It's so awesome to look back on my threads and to see what the outcome of the console war.

I actually believed in the past that the PS3 and PSP was going to drop out and look both are still running extremely well.

By the way for those that don't know Takashii was my original account :)

No, just because the console isn't number 1 doesn't mean it's worthless.

your 100% correct. If that was the case, there wouldn't be a Wii, cause Gamecube was last.
