Forums - Sales - Why are people upset the blockbusters are on the HD Consoles?

Watching third party publishers allocate resources is sort of like watching an alcoholic drink themselves to death ...

A lot of third party publishers seem to be looking at the market like there is a wall with snipers between the HD consoles and the Wii, and any game that tried to cross from one side to the other would die a horrible death. While it may be difficult to get people to buy a console for one game, (from what I have seen) getting someone who wouldn't typically play a console to buy a game for it isn't that hard when their household already has the system. What this means is that the potential customer base for most kinds of games is fairly large for all consoles, and focusing all your efforts on producing "Hardcore" games for the HD console and "Casual" games for the Wii only translates to each market being saturated on each console and you have non-optimal sales ... In my opinion this is worse when it comes to the "Hardcore" games because a game that cost $20 Million to produce and only sold 200,000 copies is far more damaging to a company than a game that cost $2 Million to produce and only sold 100,000 copies.

This is probably also a reason why developers are keeping those type of games off the console.

Call of Duty 3 was awful on the Wii and Call of Duty Modern Warfare wasn't available for the Wii, so to what extent can you blame Call of Duty World at War's poor sales on the Wii to Activision's poor handling of the series on the Wii? You have to consider that most gamers buy their games based on experience with a series and word of mouth from other individuals, and having over 600,000 Wii owners who believe Call of Duty is an awful series can't really help you sell games.

On top of that, you shouldn't cherry pick to make an argument because there are a several examples of things going the other way. Consider how Guitar Hero World Tour for the Wii is selling at a pace to outsell the PS3 and XBox 360 version combined, is this reason enough for Activision to abandon the Guitar Hero series on the HD consoles (and for EA to abandon their RockBand efforts for the HD consoles)?

Don't forget to consider the PC when talking about "HD" market, so Wii won't have above 50% and non Nintendo games usually don't sell that well.

Nintendo is destroying the industry!

When PS60 get price cut, Wii is through.

Wii Fit!!????

Nintendo is abandoning the hardcore!

When this game comes out, THEN the PS360 will take off!

Nintendo not serious about online.

Wii is just a party machine.

Wii sells because it is cheap.

Pachter says…

Nintendo milks profit due to inferior hardware!

Gamecube started well at first too…

Wii is a fad!

FREE

LOL minigames!!1!

PS3 is on a ten year plan.

Wii is two Gamecube systems put together by duct tape!

Argh!!! Non-games!!!1!!!

Wii-mote is a gimmick.

Stupid casual gamers!

Only Nintendo games sell on Nintendo systems.

When HD adoption rate goes up, Wii is finished.

Who cares about Wii sales? All the real games are on PS60!

Where are the third parties? LOL!

VC is overpriced rom dump!

What happens when people get bored of Wii Sports?

Is this a situation of "I know this is true, so I'll acknowledge it myself so others won't have the chance to make fun of me" or "In before....."? Because besides most of the blantantly retarded ones (like it's two Gamecubes, or Pachter says...) it's mostly true. VC is an overpriced ROM dump. Where ARE the MGS4s and Fallouts and Burnout Paradises on the Wii?

I don't know if someone mentioned it already but MS and Sony also invest(ed) in a lot of games for example the creators of LBP.

hypocrasy of the companies. Last gen the companies made the big games on the weakest, hardest to develope for, but largest install base machine.

this gen these same companies are producing are hardest to easy, more powerful systems, but smallest install base platforms.

Then they go on spouting that the weaker console in incapable of having "serious" games. Compltetly ignoring the PS2.

The reason it seems that there is more whining is well because there are just more people on the larger install base. If last gen all these block buster games came out the cube(LOL) the PS2 fans would be whining just as much. It's just your seeing the same percetage, but the source amount is larger.

Anyways PC gaming is not the same as Console gaming. There is a unique grey area of conversion. The PC industry has upstream and downstream games, but the upstream gamer doesn't seem to care about downstream games(PoGo Games, Puzzle Pirates, Bewjewled, Addicting Games.....). This is the result that the PC community is more emotionaly mature. You don't get PC users who have $4000 rigs snickering at users who play the same games on a $400 Dell package. Sure they won't want to touch the $400 rig and think Dells sucks, but they don't insult the people with these computers as a whole. There are however exceptions. Also these differences in computers share 2 things that consoles don't. Games scale to the hardware(within limits) and both comuters do the same primary required functions and that they have the same common functionality. drive, input, audio.

Finally the PC industry doesn't compete in the same market place. Most PC users tend to use there computers for more than just entertainment. Word processing, editing.... Yes the consoles are slowly moving into the PC territory for entertainment(media), good for them. I do believe in removing the number of devices attached to the TV. So how many consoles allow you to edit your resume?

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

It's not a matter of "hardest/easiest to develop for" but rather where the games sell. The demographics play a huge role in that. Sure, the PS3 and 360 have lower install bases, but said install bases buy big name games in droves. CoD: WaW hasn't even broken 400k on the Wii. It's sold over 6 million on the HD consoles. Get the picture?

Even taking into account last gen, the GC painted the same picture as the Wii is right now. Most, if not all, the top selling games were Nintendo games while big games like Madden or core games like Viewtiful Joe did abysmally.

Here's a basic generalization: It doesn't matter if the Wii sells 100 million units. If the people who own the system don't buy games that sell so much better on the other consoles, then why put them on the Wii?

It then becomes a domino effect. People aren't buying the games on the Wii, they are on the HD consoles. Devs put more big games on the HD consoles, and those gamers buy said games. Because they buy the games, the devs put them on the HD consoles. The cycle then just leaves the Wii out of the picture

There is no logic behind it.  And I don't like the term "HD consoles" as many blockbuster games, like GTA IV and Halo 3, aren't even HD.

Blockbusters are on lesser-selling consoles because in 2005 / 2006 when these games began development, they assumed (as did everyone) that nobody would buy "Revolution."

AAA games take between 2 to 4 years to develop.

more advanced technology allows for more advanced games.

Exactly.  I can't wait for M+ either.

PC + Wii owners unite.  Our last-gen dying platforms have access to nearly every 90+ rated game this gen.  Building a PC that visually outperforms PS360 is cheap and easy.    Oct 7th 2010 predictions (made Dec 17th '08)
PC: 10^9
Wii: 10^8

Wii has a shitty userbase that doesn't buy any good games

I will give credit to the HD fanboys about 3rd party games not selling on Wii when we get an equal version on the Wii.

So far every game that has made good use of Wii controls or balance board, and has all the features of 360/PS3 versions, sell more on wii.

And blockbusters are defined as games that sell the most obviously, if they didn't sell they wouldn't be blockbusters, Nintendo has more blockbusters than either the 360 or PS3.

Call of duty! BAM!

Calll of Duty Wii is still a gimped version.

Also, don't forget how they all say "We can't compete against nintendo games", well guess what there hasn't been a good one for 6months from Nintendo.

A perfect Window of opportunity GONE.

In my honest opinion this is what will sell well for 3rd parties on Wii.

1) A proper non gimped version, one where 100% effort was put in and not a last minute decision to make a Wii version.

2) Timed release so it ISN'T competing against Nintendo games.

3) Lots of supply sent out, CoD:WaW good example of LACK OF COPIES AT LAUNCH

4) Advertising, I hardly ever see Wii ads on tv, but this could be my area only so I can't say if they do this or not.
