Forums - Sony - Sony's Solution: Sell A Cripple Version of the Playstation 3?

even if the obvious wasnt true (that the games need the blueray drive), with the price of stand alone blueray players dropping like a stone, is it the blueray drive that is holding up the cost in any event?

I think these people really don't understand the gaming industry.

No, I don't think they understand that PS3 games come on BluRay discs...

They do. That's why they talk about downloading the games instead of using discs.

So they expect people on a budget to buy the PS3 and have a connection where they would want to download 20+ gigs of game?

@twesterm, if they do why are they thinking of removing blu-ray and trying to basethe console on the internet service. If that was the case, then Xbox 360 would be number 1 in the console war. They make it seem like a huge problem. I am telling you, all Sony needs to do is keep advertising it well and make the ps3 profitable. Dropping the price at this moment would make things worse.

They may or may not know about gaming, but the base problem is not knowing that PS3 games come on BluRay discs.  Man I would love a PS3 that can't play any of the older games and can't do BluRay discs!

Why can't Sony put all the old games online available for download?

The real problem I see with this idea is that it would require Sony to put a huge hard drive on the console. That could well be almost (or more) as expensive as the Blu-Ray drive.

Blu-ray is pretty much the only real advantage the PS3 has left. Why the hell would Sony throw that away? A lot of people pick up the PS3 because getting a Blu-ray player with your console is an incentive to them.

To put another way, why wouldn't a potential customer shrug and pick up the 360 without a hard drive instead of the PS3 without an optical drive?

god damn.

yeah all models that are beeing sold right now cant play ps2 or ps1 games i hate it but i can live with it.

i dont understand this article. the ps3 cant be anymore crpippled or it wouldnt be worth it.

and yeah what are the talking about selling it with out a bluray player... arent all ps3 games bluray discs??

so what? i wouldnt be able to play my old ps3 games on this "crippled ps3"?

wouldnt it make more sense to just make a new console??

god these people are dumb

Even the new "BC-less" PS3s can play PS1 games.

I don't know about the whole world, but in Portugal and Sweden at least you can get a very fast connection for 20-30 € a month including tax (and phone service and some other crap). I suspect the same is true for Japan.

However I still don't see why Sony would save much money with this (due to the required huge hard drive).

I don't know but my ps3 can play psone and ps2 games. I guess I got mine before they change that. I agree that taking out the BC in the new models was a bad idea. Sony is not perfect neither is any other game company. I think they are just trying to fix some of their problems step by step.

It's not that easy to put all the old games online. It costs money and if they did that, it would just make them lose twice as more money.

Yeah that will work! The PS3 is fine - why all the worry? New Year and New Titles will help Sony get more footing. They should continue to play it as they have been. Make new and valued bundles, then by mid year a price cut.
