Forums - Sales - Wall Street Journal on Sony.... Ouch!!!

That article is a very grim reality check to all those people still saying PS3 has a chance. And I still hear some people talking about a PS4...

You are funny. Yes they lost lots of money with the PS3. And a big part of that because they used it to promote BluRay. One can argue about the reasoning behind this decision. The emphasis here is on lost or past tense.
The gaming division will from now on be in the black, they will easily sell more consoles in the first 2.5 years before the price drops below 400$ than the failed Gamecube or XBOX in total and you talk about a referee counting?
There are three questions

1) Will they win this gen? The answer is no unless a miracle happens.
2) Will the PS3 in total be profitable? Probably not unless you add BluRay royalties and BluRay really gets going.
3) Will the PS3 be profitable from now on? Hell yes.

Seriously they lost lots of money and are now coming into the cash-in phase for their console and you are fantasizing about them going out?

And for the PS4? Yes there will be a PS4 and it will be cheaper. Cheaper to develop and cheaper to buy. That is sure.

@jo 21 how do u measure the "colorfulness" of a tv? :)

- you need to see those plasma Panasonic's and kuros in action;they pretty much blow SONY LCD's away

I agree with megaman that SONY products tend to be overpriced and are not usually a "bargain".. in hard economic times, consumers look for value for money. A PS3 at $499 is not considered value for money when there is an xbox arcade at $199 or a wii at $250

Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is absurd.

5 THINGS I'd like to see before i knock out:

a. a AAA 3D sonic title

b. a nintendo developed game that has a "M rating"

c. redesgined PS controller

d. SEGA back in the console business

e. M$ out of the OS business

I can't believe there's people out there thinking Sony will drop out of the console business. Even Sega could afford one flop.

Heck, even if it happens (which is EXTREMELY improbable) they would sell the playstation business unit so support would continue and no user would be left behind.

Current-gen game collection uploaded on the profile, full of win and good games; also most of my PC games. Lucasfilm Games/LucasArts 1982-2008 (Requiescat In Pace).

LCD, LCD, thats comparing apples to oranges.

of course plasmas are going to have richer colors and blacks, but as LCD sony are generally better.

at least the one i have seen.

Plasma also have way higher contrast ratio.
OLED is the new plasma slim, it seems.

you need to see those plasma

Here we come to a pet problem of mine. Plasma TVs and their videophil following. LCD TVs have won the war against Plasma TVs for a reason. Yes those have better black levels but LCDs are simply the cleaner technology with higher pixel counts, less used power, a more robust and longer living technology, smaller form factor ... And they look almost as good. Even the famous black levels are converging. After all Plasma may look slightly better for movies but LCD beat them easily if you use them for video games or as temporary PC monitor which simply makes LCD the better all-round technology.

@Jo21: Samsung manufactures Sonys LCD:s.

Ei Kiinasti.

Eikä Japanisti.

Vaan pannaan jalalla koreasti.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

@kyros

-LCD's in larger sizes are more expensive than plasmas.

-plasmas have superior viewing angles

-Plasmas support multiple resolutions- for eg SDTV doesnt look all distorted and pixely on plasmas because of this, whereas LCD's display ONLY at their native resolution.. everything is upscaled to that resolution-so more artifacts/distortion.

and a high end panasonic plasma or kuro will simply blow off a high end LCD. This isnt a LCD vs plasma thread btw but I thought id clarify it anyhow.
